In Memoriam 

The History Department lost two distinguished emeriti, Dr. John Barber and Dr. David Kamens, in September 2023.

Dr. John Barber

Dr. John Barber joined the History faculty in 1969 and retired in 2002. A specialist in Russian history, Dr. Barber was an award-winning teacher who also served a term as the History Department’s chairperson.

Dr. David Kamens

Dr. Kamens joined the History faculty in 1968 and, after a brief interval away from Ball State, returned to Ball State where he was a well-respected academic adviser. He retired in 2002. Dr. Kamens specialized in Colonial and Early American history. Like Dr. Barber, Dr. Kamens was well-known for his enthusiasm in the classroom and the many close interactions that he enjoyed with his students.

The History Department sends its sincere condolences to the families of Dr. Barber and Dr. Kamens.
