As OneDrive storage is decreased, this blog advocates for creating, storing, and sharing course videos with Panopto.

Beginning this summer, the University’s OneDrive storage will be significantly decreased. Specifically, storage quotas in existing student, faculty, and staff OneDrive accounts will gradually be reduced to 3GB. As quotas are reduced, Ball State faculty may consider moving their instructional videos to Panopto.

Panopto’s Advantage

Available to Ball State faculty and employees, Panopto is a video platform for creating, managing, and storing video content. With Panopto’s cloud storage, you can host private or shared videos securely, as viewing permissions can be set at the university, folder (course), or individual level. In addition to safely hosting videos, Panopto is built to store large video files. Ultimately, Panopto simplifies the process of storing, editing, and sharing videos.

How to Upload a Video to Panopto

To upload course videos to Panopto, you will first need to sign on to the application using your Ball State Single Sign On (SSO) information.

After signing in, you will click the red plus icon at the top left of the homepage. A drop-down menu will appear, and you will then select Upload Media.

After selecting Upload Media, you will select the video file you would like to upload. You can do so by either clicking the Choose video or audio files box and uploading from your library, or you can drag and drop a video from your library to the box itself. Learn which types of video files are supported here.

Tip: make sure you are adding the video to the correct folder! Your My Folder on Panopto is a private folder for creating and sharing videos, which may be the best option to store course content.

After the video finishes uploading, you can access it in the folder it was uploaded to.

Note: this video was uploaded to my My Folder, which can be accessed on Panopto’s navigation menu to the left of the application.

Panopto’s Editor

After uploading a video to Panopto, you may choose to edit or embed supplemental content to your video. For example, if I was to edit the video I just uploaded, I would select the Edit option by hovering over the video’s thumbnail and selecting the icon farthest to the left.

With Panopto’s editor, you can trim videos, edit audio, or add quizzes or supplemental materials. To learn more about using these features, please view our Editing Videos and In-Video Quizzes tutorial or access Panopto’s video-editing support article. This video provides viewers with a tour of the editor (4:37), as well as detailed directions for adding a table of contents (14:10), a slideshow or PowerPoint (17:35), additional video clips (27:47), or in-video quizzes (34:44), among other features.

How to Share or Embed Panopto Videos

After uploading and editing your video, you may want to share your video or embed it to Canvas. To share your video with others, select the Share icon, or the first icon at the top right corner of the editor.

Tip: you can also share videos directly from your My Folder. To do so, select the same Share icon.

When sharing your video, it’s important to update the permissions to ensure who you are sharing with has access. After selecting Share, you will be taken to a dialog box that contains multiple ways to share your video.

Select the options that best fit your video (e.g., for my video, I would set the video to Public (unlisted) so anyone with the link could access), and select the red Done button in the lower left corner. For a tutorial on the different ways to share, check out our Panopto Q&A Session recording at 42:16.

If you are interested in embedding your Panopto video to Canvas, navigate to the page where you would like to add the video and select Edit at the top right corner. Once you are in the page’s editor, select the space where you would like the video to be (in this case, my cursor is under the “Welcome Video” subheading). Then, select the green Panopto icon

A dialogue box will then open with upload options. Be sure to select the correct folder (in this case, the video we’re looking for is in My Folder), and then choose the video you would like to upload.

After choosing the correct video, select the red Insert box to embed the video to your desired page.

Final Thoughts

Panopto is more than a video creation platform. As Ball State decreases OneDrive storage, users can record, store, and share all course or instructional videos. As always, if you have any questions about Panopto or migrating videos from OneDrive, please reach out to strategiclrn@bsu.edu.
