When Michael Lane joined Ball State University in 2022 as Associate Vice President for Institutional Research, Analytics, and Decision Support, he brought with him more than two decades of experience, a deep belief in the power of higher education, and a steady, thoughtful approach to leadership.

From the very beginning, Michael’s work centered on something essential but often behind the scenes: helping the University make better decisions through data. Under his leadership, the Office of Institutional Research and Decision Support continued to strengthen its role in providing accurate reporting, meaningful analysis, and insights that support student success and institutional growth. His ability to translate complex data into clear direction made a lasting difference for both leadership and colleagues across campus.

But beyond his technical expertise, what truly stands out about Michael is how he showed up as a colleague. He brought a sense of calm, collaboration, and purpose to the work. Whether guiding large-scale initiatives or working through everyday challenges, he consistently created space for thoughtful conversation and shared progress.

Michael also brought people together in creative ways. He came up with the idea of Friday Walks, giving staff a chance to take a break, connect, and enjoy a shared moment of reflection. He also launched the Hobby Showcase, an opportunity for staff members to share a “show and tell” about a personal interest or hobby, creating space for connection, curiosity, and fun.

Michael’s journey in higher education has always been rooted in something personal. As a first-generation college student from a low-income background, he has long believed in the transformative power of education. That belief has shaped not only his career, but also the way he leads, with intention, empathy, and a strong sense of responsibility.

Before arriving at Ball State, Michael spent more than 25 years at the New York Institute of Technology, where he played a key role in advancing institutional research and building a culture of data-informed decision making. That same commitment carried through his time here, leaving a foundation that will continue to support the University well into the future.

Michael Lane on his time at Ball State:
“Never let your character be camouflaged by your enviroment”

As Michael steps into retirement, he’s looking ahead to new adventures, including a goal that feels very fitting for someone who has spent a career exploring systems and uncovering insights: visiting every national park in the United States. He’s also expressed interest in returning to a creative pursuit he once explored, crafting honey mead, a project that reflects the same curiosity and patience he brought to his professional work.

While we will certainly miss his leadership and presence, we’re excited for what lies ahead for him.

What Michael’s Colleagues Say

Michael has been more than a leader,  he was my first boss in America. He literally taught me how to navigate small talk, always approached problems with practical solutions, and genuinely cared about my career progression. I still remember him helping me calculate how much attending NYU would cost. His guidance and support have left a lasting impression, and I wish him all the best, with God’s blessings, wherever his next adventures take him.Faidat

Mike has been a true pleasure to work for over the past three and a half years, and I am incredibly grateful for the leadership he provided to IRDS. He fostered an inclusive culture where everyone felt their contributions were valued, and he strengthened our team not only through his guidance but also through thoughtful group activities—whether collaborating over puzzle building or connecting during campus walks—that brought us closer together as a team. His vision and significant contributions to institutional research have transformed our office in lasting ways and will continue to benefit the university as a whole for many years to come. Ann
Like a good scooter rider, Mike has been a steady hand on the handlebars for IRDS, helping the office gain momentum and maneuver around obstacles. I’ve especially appreciated how he has guided the research work, keeping it riding smoothly on the pavement IRDS has laid through warehousing, governance, and reporting.  — Joseph
When Mike first arrived to the IRDS, we were unsure of the future of the office. Turnover in our leadership had been high, and that left the office feeling adrift and without shape. In the time that he has been here, Mike’s careful leadership and decision making has helped us become more capable, effective, and even proactive in the face of an ever-evolving data environment. Although he is leaving BSU, he has made a mark on the office and the campus that will last long past his departure. Rather than leaving us uncertain of where we go next, we at IRDS are hopeful and ready to face our next chapter.
Although the puzzles will never be the same, we feel better equipped than ever to put the pieces together. Thank you Mike for shaping us, and good luck with whatever comes next!Cole
Mike has made a lasting impact on the IRDS office. His vision and leadership have shaped us into an integral part of the campus community and put us on the cutting edge of how an IRDS office operates and the work we accomplish. He has built a data warehouse from the ground up, nurtured an innovative and forward-thinking research team, and put the spotlight back on the team.Drew
When I started in 2023, I remember thinking how smooth and intentional everything ran — like every person and project had its place. I quickly realized that didn’t happen by accident. Mike’s leadership and drive shaped an IRDS office that works seamlessly together and leads projects that make a meaningful impact across the institution. He will be greatly missed, and we’re excited for his next adventure.Lisa

Thank You, Michael

Michael’s impact on Ball State University goes far beyond reports, data systems, or strategy. It lives in the relationships he built, the trust he earned, and the thoughtful leadership he modeled every day.

We thank him for his contributions, his integrity, and his commitment to meaningful work.

Wishing you a fulfilling, adventurous, and well-deserved retirement, Michael.
