Welcome to the Department of Physics and Astronomy!
Physics is about figuring out how things work, why they work the way they do and applying that knowledge to solve exciting technological problems. Here in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Ball State, we study the properties of matter from subatomic length scales to the structure of galaxies, and everything in between—to improve our understanding of nature.
We are also the home of the Charles W. Brown Planetarium! Indiana’s largest planetarium, over 20,000 visitors per year are entertained, informed, and inspired in the immersive theater where state-of-the-art technology transforms the 52-foot dome into a simulation of the night sky as seen from Earth and from space.
