At the 42nd Spring Awards Banquet, the Department of Mathematical Sciences proudly honored outstanding students for their academic achievements, scholarship awards, and dedication to excellence. Among the celebrated honorees was Sam Sterrett, a standout graduate who has left a lasting mark on the department and the university community.

Sam Sterrett graduated Summa Cum Laude this spring with a major in Mathematical Sciences, concentrating in Applied Mathematics, and a minor in Astrophysics. A member of the university’s Honors College, he was also the recipient of both the prestigious Edwards and Leskow Scholarships—testaments to his academic commitment and promise. Sam’s academic journey has been characterized by intellectual curiosity, perseverance, and a deep passion for mathematical exploration.

As he reflects on his undergraduate experience, Sam offers valuable advice to students just beginning their academic path…

“After graduation, I will be working as an electrical construction estimator at ERMCO, Inc. in Greenwood, Indiana. Staying in Indiana after I graduate was important to me, so my accomplishments here at Ball State were important in making that dream come true.” Sam continued, “Don’t be afraid to challenge yourself! Some of the work you face as a math major can be daunting, but the reward and gratification are worth it. I learned the most and was most intrigued by my most challenging courses.”
