Dr. Emily Johnson started her position as Director of the Graduate Program in Fall 2023. She is an Associate Professor of History and an affiliate faculty member in the Department of Women, Gender, and African American Studies.

Before landing here in 2017, she completed her Ph.D. at Yale and then taught at the University of Tennessee. Her field of study is the themes of gender, sexuality, religion, and politics in the twentieth-century United States.

Her first book, This Is Our Message (Oxford, 2019), explores the emergence of the modern Christian conservative movement in the 1970s-80s, centered on its leading women. In between her new position and aforementioned class projects, Dr. Johnson is working on a book investigating Satanic Panics in the United States.
