Janet Fick and students, with support from co-instructor Jim Jones, certified a second campus building — the Glick Center for Glass — through the USGBC’s LEED Lab initiative and received a Silver certification!
This is only the 12th building in the world certified through this initiative and Ball State has two buildings here on campus.
Ball State is one of the first participants in the USGBC’s LEED Lab program, which now has 42 institutions from around the world engaging “project based learning and the built environment to educate and prepare students to become green building leaders and sustainability-focused citizens” (USGBC, 2019).
Janet started this course years ago through a generous Provost Immersive Learning Grant, and has led different groups of students from diverse majors in collaboration on specific aspects of the certification process. Students come away with experience and skills working on an actual building certification through the LEED Existing Buildings and Operations (EBOM) process. The Letterman building was our first certified through this initiative, and now the Glick Center has achieved this higher level of certification.
“We woud like to thank Bob Koester, director or CERES, who brought this program to our attention and supported us throughout, as well as Jim Lowe, associate vice president for facilities planning and management and his team for all of the essential information, data, and assistance,” said Fick.
