What is Ball State Journalism Workshop’s Summer Workshops?

Located at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, this uniquely-structured workshop offers cutting edge courses for staffs and advisers in our state-of-the-art facilities on one of the most beautiful college campuses in the nation.

Our faculty ranks among the best, including national award-winning collegiate and faculty instructors whose media have earned the highest honors as well as digital media professionals who transfer their real-world experience to practical applications for students to take back to their staffs. Journalists and advisers will attend a five-day workshop to hone the skills necessary to hit the ground running when school resumes in the fall.

Of course, the fun factor of BSU Journalism Workshops Summer Workshops is off the charts! With a volleyball tournament and game nights, free time is filled with activities. For more than 50 years, BSU Journalism Workshops has set trends and trained staff members, student leaders and advisers in broadcast, web, news, yearbook, social media, mobile journalism and more in our innovative programs using cutting-edge technology.

2018 Overview:

With our theme, “Journalism Live”, Ball State Journalism Workshops 2018 will focus on the fast-paced, cutting edge aspects of Journalism today. Students should leave Workshops 2018 empowered to tell better stories and work together to create their best publication with the tools and resources available to them. 

Staffs who attended together had dedicated time to collaborate, bond and create tools to prepare them for a successful school year.

Who: Middle and high school journalism students & media advisers

When:June 10-14, 2018

Where: Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana

Cost: $400 for students

Local students: $300 for students living within 20 miles of Ball State’s campus, does not include housing (additional parking fees will be incurred)

May 14: Registration and payment must be submitted online before this date

June 10: First day of Summer Workshops

June 14: Final day of Summer Workshops

PAYMENT

Forms MUST need to be submitted online to our office before May 14, 2018. Students can either pay online with a credit/debit card or can mail in check payments. Check payments must be delivered to the office later than May 21.

Allow five days for mailing. NO LATE REGISTRATION FORMS WILL BE ACCEPTED.

REFUND POLICY

Full refunds will not be made after the May 14, 2018 deadline. Cancellations before May 14 will be given a full refund, minus a $75 processing fee.

TRAVEL

If you are traveling to Workshops via a flight, you will need to read and comply with the following form. We will provide a shuttle from the Indianapolis Airport to campus on Saturday, June 9. The shuttle will leave the airport at 5 p.m. Please plan flights accordingly. On Thursday, June 14, the shuttle will leave campus at noon and arrive at the Indianapolis Airport at about 1:30 p.m. We suggest planning for flights leaving Indianapolis after 3:30 p.m.

Summer Workshops Scholarships

BSU Journalism Workshops offers two need-based scholarships for qualified applicants. Scholarships include tuition costs but not meals or transports. A refundable $70 deposit is required with application.

If you plan to apply for a scholarship, the deadline to turn in your registration form and application materials will be May 1, 2018.

Email bsuworkshops@bsu.edu with:

  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Three clips of your work or a link to your portfolio website.
  • A one-page narrative explaining why you should receive a scholarship, including your financial need.

All students are welcome to apply. Preference will be given to students from diverse backgrounds and diverse schools and those who meet financial need.
