Life is busy, and it is not always easy to carve out time for these conversations. However, an up-to-date will and current beneficiary designations can help ensure your wishes are honored, provide clarity for your loved ones, and give you peace of mind.

For many Ball State alumni and friends, creating a will is also an opportunity to consider the legacy they hope to leave for their families and future generations.

Why Is Having a Will Important?

A will allows you to:

Decide how your assets will be distributed.
Name guardians for minor children.
Choose someone to carry out your wishes.
Help reduce confusion and stress for your loved ones.
Support the people and organizations that matter most to you.

Is It Time to Update Your Plans?

If you already have a will, consider reviewing it after major life changes, including:

Marriage or divorce.
The birth or adoption of a child or grandchild.
Moving to a new state.
Purchasing a home or another significant asset.
Changes in your financial situation.
The loss of a loved one.
Changes to your chosen executors, trustees, guardians, or beneficiaries.

Remember to review the beneficiary designations on retirement accounts, life insurance policies, and investment accounts, too.
