The Communication Team is responsible for writing scripts, blogs, and website content for projects across campus, paying special attention to tone and style according to context and audience. Although blogs and website content are more obvious examples of the Communication Team’s work, scripts, such as the ones used to create the eClassroom Setup videos, are perhaps less obvious, but still deserving of recognition. Moreover, they are a great example of how projects are spread across multiple teams.

Most video projects that come through the Corps have a script, meaning that video projects, including the eClassroom Setup videos, are not only the result of the Video Team’s efforts, but also those of the Communication Team. Scripts provide structure and clarity, making them an important initial step in the video production process.

Although script writing may sound simple at first, it requires careful attention to detail—scripts must communicate the central message of the video while balancing the needs and wants of the client and their audience. Scripts also follow particular formatting, with sections to map out time for animations, transitions, and describe visual elements.

There are different kinds of technology across campus classrooms, meaning that different scripts, and subsequent videos, were needed. The Communication Team was responsible for writing detailed, instructional scripts for each classroom technology identified by the client.

Jacey Hollars

Jacey Hollars, a member of the Communication Team, described her experience writing these scripts, “This project was my first IT-related project, so it was something that had a more aggressive learning curve compared to everything else I have worked on at the Corps. It really helped me comprehend technological writing a lot more…it also helped with my client communication.”

She went on to say, “I was really unfamiliar with script writing and technical writing, so it gave me the opportunity to grow in those areas and made me a better member of the Communication Team.

Once finished, the eClassroom Setup videos will aid instructors and faculty to more seamlessly utilize campus technologies as they give presentations or teach classes. Ultimately, projects like this one highlight the importance of collaborative planning and communication throughout the Corps.
