Analytical, inquisitive, and detail-oriented. These qualities have shaped senior James Ramsey into a dedicated computer science student. Through his work in development and accessibility, James has taken on projects that challenge him while also creating a lasting impact on campus.

James did not always plan to study computer science. He originally intended to pursue environmental science, but after taking an introductory course, he found himself drawn to the field and decided to make the switch. Since then, he has been actively involved in his program and has continued to seek out new opportunities to grow.

“I started in environmental science, but after one intro class, I switched to computer science and have been enjoying it since.”

He has participated in research focused on data analysis at Ball State and is currently completing an independent study centered around an open-source calendar application. The project is designed to make scheduling more visual and accessible for offices with many employees.

“It’s a meticulous and time-intensive process, but it’s really helped me build patience and attention to detail.”

In addition, his capstone project focuses on building a laundry application that allows users to pay via their phones and view compatible machine locations. His motivation is rooted in genuine interest, which continues to drive his persistence across both academic and extracurricular work.

At the Digital Corps, James focuses his work on development and accessibility. He works alongside other development team members and collaborates with staff dedicated to accessibility to support training and introduce key web accessibility concepts. He has contributed to developing accessibility-focused training materials that help guide how accessibility principles are implemented across projects at the Digital Corps.

“It’s been a meticulous process. I didn’t think accessibility would be such a big part of computer science, but working in this area has really expanded my knowledge.”

What started as an unfamiliar area has become a focal part of his work, allowing him to create more inclusive tools. James credits much of his experience to the opportunity to work alongside other computer science students. This environment has allowed him to continue learning while developing a broader understanding of how the industry operates.

“Working at the Digital Corps has been a truly rewarding experience. It’s great to see my coworkers in the development team be as invested in their work as I am.”

James is most proud of his work in accessibility and the long-term impact it can have on campus. Looking ahead, he plans to pursue a career as a software engineer while continuing his education through a master’s degree in computer science. He also hopes to eventually earn a Ph.D. in physics.

James is excited to take the experiences he had at the Corps into the professional world. We can’t wait to see his contributions in the field of computer science!
