MONDAY | MAR 18| 4PM | AB100

Lorcan O’Herlihy will lecture on the topic “Amplified Urbanism” at 4 p.m. March 18 at Estopinal College of Architecture and Planning as part of the college’s prestigious Sappenfield guest lecture series. The free lecture will be held in AB 100, and all are welcome.

“Exceptional architecture elevates the built environment in dimensions that radiate far beyond normal parameters: This principle has guided Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects [LOHA] for 25 years,” according to LOHA. The term Amplified Urbanism relates to LOHA’s design methodology, which is rooted in creating fluid interaction between public and private spaces, emphasizing social and civic connections, and harnessing existing ecological and infrastructural patterns. “This lecture will walk you through a series of LOHA projects and highlights how the tenets of Amplified Urbanism have been successfully implemented to cultivate vibrant communities. Each of these projects demonstrates our commitment to artistry, social justice and elevating the human condition through creating uplifting and enriching living spaces.”

Mr. O’Herlihy, FAIA, founding principal and creative director of LOHA, seeks opportunities to engage with the ever-changing complexities of the urban landscape, while embracing architecture as a catalyst of change. Since founding his firm in 1994, his work has been guided by a conscious understanding that architecture operates within a layered context of political, developmental, environmental, and social structures. With offices in Los Angeles and Detroit, his firm has built over 100 projects across three continents.

His commitment to design excellence in commercial, educational and residential projects earned him a nomination to the Academy of Arts and Letters and over 100 national and international design awards, including the 2021 AIA Los Angeles Gold Medal, AIA Los Angeles Firm of the Year Award, AIA CC Distinguished Practice Award, the Architect’s Newspaper’s Best of Practice – Best North American Firm Award, and in 2018 was awarded the status of #1 Design Firm in the US by Architect Magazine.

Learning objectives for this lecture include:

  • Provoke conversations about how cities may become more dynamic, sustainable, and productive environments for all.
  • Reimagine the creative interaction between public and private spaces.
  • Emphasize social and civic connections.
  • Work within existing ecological and infrastructural patterns.
