Construction Management students had a big year with five teams competing in the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Regional Competition. This is the first time we fielded five groups at this competition. During the course of the event students won two 2nd place victories and a 3rd place!
The ASC competition does an excellent job in providing an environment for the competitors to simulate and experience life in the construction world as a self-performing subcontractor.

Concrete Category
This year was the first time students competed in the Concrete category led by coach Mike Mezo. This was the most competitive division at the event, with 10 teams competing from all over the country. We are proud to say one of our concrete teams came home with second place.
The competition guidelines involved preparing for a subcontract for the structural concrete elements of a large-scale warehouse, including foundations, slabs on grade, concrete slabs, high-tolerance and specialty slabs, walls, and dock pits.
Design-Build Category 3rd Place – Mackenzie Park captained the team with members Richard Bowman, Jake Kriech, Kimmie Kim, Nick Bloom, and Jake Thayer
Design-Build Category
Coach Mezo’s Design-Build team finished in 3rd place, closely behind our arch-rivals Ferris State and the Milwaukee School of Engineering. The performance of this interdisciplinary team of construction management and architecture students secured Ball State’s 11th time placing in the top three spots in this competition.
In this category our students competed against those from across the Great Lakes region. The assignment involved the design and construction planning of a new university residential housing project intended to serve 450 undergraduate students as well as including administrative, multipurpose, lounge, laundry, and support spaces.
Preconstruction Category 2nd Place – Team members included Captain Michale Delong, Cory Huffman, Ross Debonis, Austin Fest, John Spencer, and Clayton Berrisford
Preconstruction Category
Coach Gary Birk led his team to a 2nd place finish in the Preconstruction category. This is an “open” division, where teams from across the country send their best students to compete. We think our team had the best presentation, but was narrowly edged out on total points by Cal Poly with the University of Southern California coming in 3rd.
The project for the preconstruction category was a $15-25 million renovation of high-end retail space within an active retail environment.
