The 2026 fall semester is in full swing and the Writing Center at Ball State has some exciting events planned for writers. Remember that we offer three different types of appointments. First, our Planning Sessions can help writers work through the assignment prompt, generate ideas, narrow topics, set goals. Next, our Feedback Sessions are the most common and can provide writers with feedback on work that’s in progress. Finally, our Accountability Sessions allow writers to get scheduled writing time on their calendars. A tutor is available during accountability sessions, but the main goal is to write.

We staff and train our 20-30 undergraduate and graduate tutors to respond to texts in various stages, genres, disciplines, and modes. We are just as likely to work with students from first-year writing courses as we are to work with doctoral students completing their dissertations. Our tutors often represent majors from across campus. Current and previous tutors have come from majors including English Education, Journalism, Criminal Justice, Political Science, Creative Writing, Psychology, and dietetics.

In addition to our regular weekday and evening services, we will be making appearances around campus to provide even more services and support to all our Ball State writers. Be sure to check us out at the following events. Chirp on! Write on! with the Writing Center at Ball State.

Star Party

The Writing Center hosted a table at Star Party 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2026, in the Noyer Green. This event was hosted by The College of Sciences and Humanities along with the Social Sciences and the Humanities Living Learning Communities. Visitors explored other student services, grabbed a piece of pizza, chatted with some of our amazing tutors, snagged one of our new stickers and/or fidgets, and were encouraged to set up an appointment this fall.

Camp Bracken

Stop by the Writing Center table at Camp Bracken 12 to 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, 202b, in Bracken Library. This event is hosted by University Libraries. Explore other student services, chat with some of our amazing tutors, snag one of our new stickers, and set up an appointment to get started on your writing this fall.

Write On! Graduate Writing Retreat

The Writing Center and the Graduate school are excited to join forces for a second year to bring graduate writers the Write On! Graduate Writing Retreat 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, September 18, 2025, in the Ball State Student Center. All graduate writers who attend will receive a free Write On! t-shirt, breakfast, lunch, and tote bag with Writing Center and Graduate School swag. Writers may choose between attending workshop sessions or participating in structured writing time. The event is free, and while we encourage you to make time to devote the entire day to your writing, attendees are welcome to come and go. Remember the Writing Center is also available to help support your writing this fall. All appointments are available either in person at one of our two locations or online via the WCOnline website. Our main location is in the Robert Bell building, second floor, room 295, and we offer all our daytime appointments (Mon.-Thurs. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. & Fri. 11 a.m.-2 p.m.) at this location.
