Each year, the Ball State University Foundation recognizes exceptional students through the Top 100 Student Awards, honoring undergraduates who embody Beneficence through leadership, service, and academic excellence at Ball State University.

In this series, we’re highlighting Teachers College and secondary education students selected for this recognition, an inspiring group of future educators who are already making an impact on campus, in the community, and in the lives of those around them.

Next in the series is Serenity Dutton, a junior majoring in Elementary Education with minors in Psychology and Counseling. Through leadership, service, and a passion for helping others succeed, Serenity is preparing to make a meaningful difference in the lives of future students.

Inspired by Teachers Who Believed in Her

The foundation for Serenity’s future career was built through years of positive experiences in the classroom and the example set by the educators around her.

“My interest in education was inspired by my own teachers who always pushed me to be the best version of myself. I was motivated by this and their support that let me know I could do anything.”

The encouragement and support she received from those teachers helped shape her confidence and inspired her to pursue a profession where she can have a similar impact on others.

A strong sense of community played a major role in Serenity’s college decision and has remained one of the defining parts of her Ball State experience. That feeling of belonging has continued throughout her time as a student.

“I have always felt at home while being at Ball State.”

The People Who Make the Experience Special

Among all of the experiences she’s had at Ball State, the relationships she’s formed have been especially meaningful.

“My favorite experience at Ball State so far has been meeting my best friends.”

The friendships and connections she’s built have become an important source of support, encouragement, and lasting memories throughout her college journey.

Leading Through Service and Involvement

Serenity has embraced numerous opportunities to serve, lead, and connect with others during her time at Ball State.

Her involvement includes:

  • Resident Assistant
  • Donor Relations Chair for the Philanthropy Education Council
  • Vice President of Recruitment and Community for College Mentors for Kids
  • Member of National Residence Hall Honorary
  • Through these experiences she has developed leadership skills, built meaningful relationships, and found opportunities to support both her peers and the broader campus community.

Looking Ahead to the Classroom

Serenity’s long-term goals combine her passion for teaching with her interest in supporting students’ academic and personal development.

“After graduation, I would love to teach in an upper elementary classroom, then pursue my master’s in school psychology.”

By pairing her education degree with minors in psychology and counseling, she is building a strong foundation for helping students thrive both inside and outside the classroom.

Excited for What’s Next

As graduation gets closer, Serenity is eager to move from preparing to teach to leading a classroom community of her own.

“I am most excited be in the field and have a classroom community of my own.”

The opportunity to build relationships with students is one of the things she looks forward to most.

“I can’t wait to meet my future students.”

Advice for Future TC Students

One lesson Serenity has learned during her time at Ball State is the value of investing in the people around you.

“To incoming Teachers College freshman, take the time to build connections early on.”

Those relationships can have a lasting impact throughout a student’s college experience and beyond.

“These connections will stick with you all through your time at Ball State.”

Finding Joy and Balance

Like many busy college students, Serenity values activities that help her relax, recharge, and spend time with the people she cares about.

“My favorite hobbies are swimming, journaling, coloring, and spending time with friends.”

Whether she’s reflecting through journaling, enjoying time outdoors, or connecting with friends, she understands the importance of maintaining balance while pursuing her goals.

A Fun Fact

Serenity’s interests extend beyond education and student leadership.

“I played the clarinet for 7 years.”

Her years of musical experience are just one more example of the diverse experiences she brings to her future classroom.

Creating the Same Impact She Once Received

The support Serenity received from her own teachers helped shape the person she is today. As she prepares for a future in education, she hopes to provide that same encouragement and guidance to the next generation of learners.

With a passion for community, leadership, and student success, Serenity is already making an impact, and she’s just getting started.

Stay tuned as we continue highlighting outstanding future educators in our Top 100 Student Spotlight series.
