Finding Her Footing at Ball State
Now a few weeks into her second semester as a sophomore, Noelle Gapinski is continuing to grow into her role as a future educator at Ball State University. Originally from Valparaiso, Indiana, Noelle is majoring in Elementary Education and is a recipient of the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship, which supports students preparing to teach in Indiana schools.
Noelle shared these reflections a few weeks into her first semester as a sophomore, a time marked by increased confidence, new responsibilities, and deeper involvement both in and out of the classroom.
Wanting to Be a Safe Space
For Noelle, the motivation to become a teacher is rooted in care and connection.
“I want to become an educator because I want to be a safe space for students,” she shared.
That simple but powerful goal guides how she approaches her studies and her involvement on campus, shaping her vision of the kind of educator she hopes to become.
Choosing the Right Fit
When deciding where to attend college, Noelle knew she needed a place that aligned with her goals.
“I chose Ball State because it was the best fit for me wanting to go into teaching!” she said.
Now in her second year, that choice continues to feel right as she builds community, gains classroom experience, and explores what it means to support students academically and personally.
Reflecting on the First Year
Looking back, Noelle describes her first year at Ball State as both fun and formative.
“My first year at Ball State was a lot of fun,” she said. “My favorite memory was meeting my group of friends.”
Like many students, she’s also learned important lessons along the way. “Something I would do differently was find my balance more and put myself first a lot more often,” she reflected.
Her advice for students just starting their college journey comes from that experience: “Ask questions if you don’t know the answer, find your group of people, and find your study method that works best for you.”
Getting Involved and Taking on Leadership
Noelle has found a strong sense of belonging through campus involvement. She is active in the Alpha Delta Kappa Collegiate Club (ADKCC), where she serves as the Events and Membership Chair, and she is also involved in the Preservice Teacher Community of Practice (PTCP).
One of her favorite experiences so far has been her involvement in ADKCC, which has given her leadership opportunities and meaningful connections with other future educators.
Life Outside the Classroom
When she’s not studying or attending meetings, Noelle enjoys slowing down and recharging. She likes to go on walks, read, and spend time with friends. And for a fun fact? Noelle loves the beach, something she carries with her as a reminder to pause, breathe, and enjoy the moment.
Learning and Looking Ahead
Academically, Noelle has already found classes that have made an impact. “My favorite class so far has been BIO 102!” she shared, highlighting the wide range of experiences shaping her education.
As she continues through her sophomore year, Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship recipient Noelle Gapinski is building confidence, balance, and purpose. With a focus on community, leadership, and being a supportive presence for students, she is laying the foundation for a future classroom where every student feels seen and supported.
