Making Waves at Ball State
From West Lafayette, Indiana, Lauren Fecher is continuing to make her mark at Ball State University as both a committed student and a dedicated athlete. Now in her sophomore year, Lauren is majoring in Elementary Education and is a proud recipient of the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship, awarded to aspiring Indiana teachers who are passionate about shaping young learners’ futures.
Lauren shared these reflections a few weeks into her sophomore year, a time filled with new experiences, confidence from her first year, and excitement for what lies ahead. Since then, she has completed her first semester as a sophomore and is already diving into her second.
Called to Teach
For Lauren, the decision to pursue education comes from a genuine desire to support children as they discover who they are and who they can become.
“I want to become an educator to help students learn and grow to become what they want to be when they grow up,” she shared.
Her vision extends beyond academics, she wants to help students build confidence, curiosity, and a belief in themselves.
Finding the Right Fit at Ball State
When choosing a university, Lauren knew she wanted a place that felt like home while challenging her to grow.
“I chose Ball State because I loved the campus and the people I met while I was here,” she said. “When looking at academics and athletics I saw a good balance of both of them here.”
That sense of belonging, paired with strong academic preparation and athletic opportunity, continues to anchor her experience, especially now that she’s well into her second year.
Looking Back, Moving Forward
Reflecting on her journey so far, Lauren describes her time at Ball State as meaningful and memorable. Thinking back to her early college experiences, she shared:
“My first year at Ball State was lots of fun. I enjoyed going to different sporting events and spending my time with my friends.”
As a student who has learned how busy life can become, her advice for others beginning their college journey is thoughtful and practical:
“I would tell people to organize their time and make sure you are spending it how you want to.”
Student, Scholar, and Athlete
Lauren’s Ball State story is also shaped by her role as a student-athlete. She is a member of the Ball State Swimming and Diving Team, where she has built community, resilience, and discipline.
Outside of academics and athletics, she makes time for the things that bring comfort and joy. “I enjoy reading, watching TV shows, and taking naps,” she said. She also loves music, and proudly shares that she has seen Taylor Swift, Tate McRae, and Sabrina Carpenter in concert.
Finding Purpose Through Classroom Experience
One of the most defining parts of Lauren’s time at Ball State so far has been her opportunity to engage directly in the classroom.
“I have really enjoyed my EDRD 300 practicum because I get to be in a Kindergarten classroom working with kids each week,” she said.
Those weekly experiences have reinforced her passion for teaching and continue to confirm that she is on the right path.
Looking Ahead
Now entering the second semester of her sophomore year, Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship recipient Lauren Fecher is building a strong foundation for her future career in teaching. Whether she is in the classroom, competing with her teammates, cheering at campus events, or spending time with friends, Lauren is energized by connection, growth, and the opportunity to make a difference.
