Each year Teachers College (TC) honors outstanding alumni with awards that celebrate the impact that they have on their community, field, and the TC family. Also honored are non-alumni who have provided great service to Teachers College. The Distinguished Service Award is presented to a non-alumnus in recognition of their outstanding service and support for the Teachers College.

Shawn Sriver – Teachers College Distinguished Service Award Winner

Shawn Sriver is the Accreditation and Assessment Coordinator at TC, a position he has held for 15 years. He started his career as an English teacher at Bremen High School and was named 1988-1989 Teacher of the Year. He taught English and Journalism at Hamilton Southeastern High school and was the sponsor of the school newspaper.

After that, he spent 17 years at the Indiana Department of Education. During his last four years at the IDOE, he was appointed by Dr. Suellen Reed to be the Director of the Professional Standards Board, an agency which included teacher licensing, teacher testing, teacher internship program, and the accreditation of teacher preparation programs for the State of Indiana.

He was recruited to work at Ball State by former TC Dean Roy Weaver, and since then, he has diligently overseen Teachers College accreditation, allowing our programs to celebrate continuous improvement and the success of our students.

What is your favorite part of working in higher education?

I enjoy building strong relationships with faculty, professional colleagues, support staff, and colleagues outside of campus.

Do you have any hobbies, or favorite things you do to relax that you would like to share with us?

I consider myself to be a music historian of music during the era of 1950-1999. I also am a film historian of any era. I enjoy reading, especially during the summer. I am a fanatic of NFL football.

Fun fact about yourself:

I have published a book that I co-wrote with Roy Weaver and David Sullivan. The book is called “Running Against the Grain: The Story of Philadelphia Eagle and Movie Star Timmy Brown”

Is there anything else you would like to add? 

I have been married to my wonderful and beautiful wife Tanya since 1989.
