The William & Evelyn Stokes Art or Mathematics Educators Scholarship is dedicated to supporting students demonstrating financial need in pursuing an undergraduate degree in Art or Math education at Ball State University. Twelve Ball State students were awarded the 2022-2023 scholarships, and as the 2023-2024 deadline to apply approaches, we are highlighting a few of this year’s winners.

Name:

Brenda Harder (She/Her)

Hometown:

Schererville, IN

Are you involved with any sports or clubs, etc. at Ball State? If so, what?

I am the founder and president of the student organization BallVivor. Our organization is Ball State’s version of the reality TV show Survivor. Throughout the academic year, we host, film, and edit two seasons with a spectacularly diverse cast. Episodes of our work are now on YouTube for the Ball State community to watch.

What are you studying at Ball State?

Secondary Mathematics Education and minoring in Educational Technology

What makes you want to become an educator/teacher?

I chose to pursue a career in teaching because I like seeing growth in others’ knowledge that I had a key role in. Throughout high school, I excelled in my math courses and felt satisfied when helping classmates fully understand a problem they were having trouble with. I value that education is ever changing and how it allows me to work with a new group of students each year.

What made you choose Ball State?

I chose to attend Ball State because of the teacher education program. I knew I always wanted to be a teacher and I felt like Ball State’s mathematics education program would best prepare me for the field. Another reason why I chose Ball State is the fact that when I stepped onto campus, it felt like home. Instantly, I felt like a member of the Ball State and Muncie community.
