Have you noticed anything new about the buildings on campus? Over the last few years, multiple buildings on campus have been certified in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).
Ball State University is taking a main role in sustainability by ensuring that all new campus buildings and renovations meet the LEED certification standard. This certification exemplifies the University’s commitment to the environment by focusing on sustainable site selection, energy and water efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality. Currently, nine buildings on campus are Gold Level LEED Certified.
In addition to adhering to LEED guidelines for its buildings, Ball State actively participates in the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) LEED Lab program. This course provides students with hands-on experience in green building practices. Through project-based learning, students assess campus facilities and work toward achieving LEED for Building Operations and Maintenance (LEED O+M) certification. This immersive experience helps students gain valuable experience in sustainability and prepares them for careers in the green building industry.
These new buildings have various new features such as CO2 sensors. The integration of CO2 sensors in renovated buildings at Ball State is an example of how IT contributes to sustainability. These sensors are part of a smart building management system that monitors indoor air quality in real-time, automatically adjusting ventilation systems to maintain optimal conditions while minimizing energy consumption and reducing the university’s overall carbon footprint.
“At Ball State, we are committed to creating a brighter future for everyone. That commitment goes beyond education. It includes serving as stewards of our natural resources so that generations to come inherit a healthy Earth.” University President Geoffrey S. Mearns said.
Ball State University has multiple sustainability initiatives in place to help improve the health and well-being of the environment. This will allow for continual growth on campus and in the community of Muncie!
