Sports and technology are coming together in powerful new ways, and Ball State is stepping up to the plate. With growing interest in performance analytics and enhanced fan engagement, college athletics are embracing innovation to stay ahead. What may look like a few new cameras on the field is a leap toward the future of training.

Recently, cameras were installed in the Ball State baseball and softball stadiums with help from the Office of Information Technology. These cameras will be used to analyze the motion of batter swings and pitcher throws. Having access to these visuals will help teams elevate their game and give TV viewers a different angle of the games.

“Our part of the project was to install fiber and network infrastructure around the baseball and softball fields, to support cameras capable of streaming the games online,” Director of Unified Communications, Chris Cahoe explained.

This project started in the winter where various members in the department worked through the cold conditions, installing approximately 3,000 feet of fiber.

“The footage can also be used to review practices as well,” Director of University Media Services, Alan Gordon, added.

This integration of technology into athletics shows how IT can play a vital role in performance analysis, fan engagement, and the overall evolution of the sports experience!
