Sports production on Ball State’s campus continues to improve, thanks to the wonderful IT staff at University Media Services.

IT installed new fiber optic cable composed of glass fibers that carries pulses of light back and forth to move large amounts of data from Scheumann Stadium to the ESPN control room at the Ball Communications building.

Previously, IT’s cameras required a Triax copper cable. However, IT received new cameras that required the new fiber installment.

Scheumann Stadium has possessed cabling for 10 years due to advancements in equipment, and IT has installed 192 of the new fibers to interconnect between UMS and ESPN production.

“Our goal is to create a broadcast that our university and its alumni can be proud of, and I think they meet that goal every game,” said Keith Huffman, Production Manager for UMS.

Many important IT staff members, including UMS Producer Eric Parin, Director Alex Seitz, Audio Director Ben Barry, Replay Operator Cameron Smallwood, and Graphics Coordinator Austin Hernandez, work long weekends and evenings to make sure the games look great.
