Meet Rebecca Wasio! Rebecca is a two-time Cardinal graduate. She earned her undergraduate degree in 2002 and an MA in Elementary Education in 2014. Rebecca is currently a 3rd-grade teacher at South Bend Hebrew Day School. Chirp Chirp!

What led you to your graduate program at BSU?

I always believed in building my professional knowledge. I graduated in 2002 with my undergraduate degree, and around 2011, I took some graduate courses at a college near where I lived. I wanted to grow my professional knowledge. So in 2012, I transferred those credits and pursued the program online, which allowed me to go at my own pace. The summers were when I took my classes, when I was off while teaching at Head Start.

What was your proudest memory as a BSU grad student?

It was probably during that time that I realized that I really enjoyed child development research. I had a couple of part-time research positions doing assessments with children and observations in classrooms. Getting more into understanding the importance of research and how to apply it to what we’re doing every day stands out to me.

How have you been able to use your graduate degree(s) from BSU?
I’ve been able to teach in higher education. I taught at Ivy Tech Community College. The research experience helped me with the positions when I was conducting field research for work. I feel like I’m implementing my knowledge every day in any position I’m in.
What advice or wisdom do you have to share with current BSU grad students?
My advice is just to focus on what really gets you excited or gives you that feeling of “oh, I could do this for hours.” And if it’s not teaching in the classroom, that’s ok! I’ve learned that there’s quite a bit out there for folks in education. Don’t be afraid to pursue what lights your fire.
