Meet Heather Ervin! Heather is a two-time graduate of Ball State’s College of Health. She earned a Bachelor of Social Work in 2011 and a Master of Arts in Applied Gerontology in 2018. Chirp Chirp to this difference maker!

What led you to your graduate program at BSU?

I wanted to move forward in my career, but I wasn’t sure I wanted to go the normal route of a Master’s in Social Work. I worked in a long-term care facility and fell in love with geriatric patients, specifically with connecting folks to community services and resources. Seeing their zest for life, even in their hardest moments, was inspiring to me. I really enjoyed my time on campus at BSU during my undergrad, so I thought I would pursue a degree there, online, in the Gerontology program, as it was considered one of the top programs in the country. I wanted a degree that would let me continue working with older adults.

What was your proudest memory as a BSU grad student?

Being able to apply what I was learning in grad school in real time in my current job. Also, completing my degree while working full-time. It was tough but worth it!

How have you been able to use your graduate degree from BSU?

I work as the Director of Social Services in a local, long-term care and rehabilitation facility. I love making connections with my patients and helping them find the tools they need to succeed when they discharge from our facility. I am also on the Ivy Tech Advisory Board for Human Services and work with interns looking for experience in a long-term care facility. I really like mentoring future social workers and showing them the ropes of geriatrics and long-term care.

What advice or wisdom do you have to share with current BSU grad students?

Keep pushing! It seems almost impossible at times, but after you’re finished with your degree, you will look back and think, “I did that!”
