Welcome to the first blog entry of the Fall 2013 academic semester. My name is Regan Kelly. I am currently a sophomore working on two majors in Art History and Psychology. I am a new intern for this semester and will be updating periodically.

Friday, August 23rd, the museum hosted events as part of Quad Bash. This was my first volunteer event at the museum. Between 5 and 8 pm, about 200 people stopped by to visit the wonderful collection the museum has on display, including a handful of new galleries. Many of our visitors won free t-shirts and posters, and enjoyed cold ice cream sandwiches to stay cool on the hot day.

One fun activity was to write 6 or less words about your experience in the David Owsley Museum of Art. Each person who filled out a paper had their photo taken in the sculpture court. I volunteered to work in the Postermania room, location in the Brown Study Room, and take pictures of those who filled out the “6 words or less” activity. The reaction of each visitor was universally positive, even a few said it was “The best Friday night!” In total, 32 visitors agreed to take pictures so we could upload them to the David Owsley Museum Facebook page. I’d like to thank each person who participated for supporting the museum.

Each visitor was offered an “Eye Spy” sheet at the door. This activity allowed children, as well as adults, to learn more about the pieces in the museum by looking for a specific feature of the works of art: the eyes.  Everyone who went on the hunt for these works enjoyed trying to find them and reading more about each one. This activity is one which I would like to see more often in the museum, and many visitors agree that they would come by more if there were fun little activities like this.

Quad Bash was a fun time for visitors and volunteers. The more people who visit, the more fun the experience is. Be sure to stop by next year and any time during our normal open hours.

Here are some great photos taken during the event:
