Five colleagues share their experience with nontraditional and alternative grading practices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Assessment is an important teaching tool. Yet, some aspects of traditional grading systems can reinforce imbalanced power structures. Studying grading practices more closely can help instructors accurately measure students\u2019 knowledge, skills, and growth. This approach to assessment can lead to improved learning outcomes, increased student motivation, and a more inclusive educational environment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A group of faculty dedicated to this conversation presented earlier this year at the Ball State Student Success Summit, \u201cLeveraging Tools, Techniques, and Technologies for Student Success<em>.\u201d <\/em>It was the perfect opportunity to showcase how Ball State faculty are exploring nontraditional grading practices.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Panelists included:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"322\" src=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2025\/03\/27141936\/josh-mannix_august_2022.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-987\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2025\/03\/27141936\/josh-mannix_august_2022.png 300w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/34\/2025\/03\/27141936\/josh-mannix_august_2022-280x300.png 280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsu.edu\/academics\/collegesanddepartments\/math\/about\/facultyandstaff\/faculty\/mannixjosh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Josh Mannix<\/a>, Assistant Teaching Professor of Mathematical Sciences.\u00a0<br>Josh Mannix has been implementing alternative grading since 2023. He uses specifications grading and student conference in his courses for elementary and math education majors. She incorporates collaborative grading, reflection, and student conferences in the UCC course HSC160 and the health science course for education majors. She describes the switch as \u201clife-changing\u201d for both the instructor and students. He continues to develop grading systems that best support his students. In his digital marketing course, he employs various techniques such as project-based learning, provides extensive qualitative feedback, encourages resubmissions, and has reflective touchpoints for students to talk about their growth. Over the past two years, she has been exploring alternative grading practices.&nbsp; She uses complete\/incomplete, encourages revisions, and allows students to demonstrate growth through revision and reflection. Benefits Kathryn has noticed include students appreciate the transparency. Less confident writers feel they are capable of doing the work of writing, while students confident with their writing ability are willing to be more creative and take risks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Watch the Panel Conversation\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We invite you to watch the entire conversation below. Instead, select a current assessment that would adapt to a nontraditional grading structure.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Be transparent<\/strong> \u2013 Explain your rationale for alternative grading to your students. Communicate how it will work and what they can expect from themselves and you as their instructor. Check<s>&#8211;<\/s>in with students before, during, and after the assessment.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Use resources to support your journey <\/strong>\u2013 Reach out to like-minded colleagues, such as those on the panel, to discuss experiences.
