What Does it Apply To?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can read a more detailed discussion of the updated accessibility requirements in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bsu.edu\/teaching-innovation\/2026\/03\/04\/new-title-ii-ada-digital-accessibility-rule-takes-effect-april-24\/\"><strong>this previous blog post<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Specifically, <strong>accessibility concerns are particularly prominent for but are not limited to:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>PowerPoint slides (such as lecture slides)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Images included in the course site, slide decks, and\/or readings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Video content<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PDF readings or handouts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Course syllabus<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsu.edu\/about\/administrativeoffices\/marketing-communications\/brand-resources\/web-and-digital-accessibility#accordion_pdfdocuments\"><strong>The Web and Digital Accessibility site<\/strong><\/a> from Marketing and Communications is a great resource hub, providing information that covers the broad range of digital accessibility. In particular, its resources support BSU community members who produce publicly visible content, such as websites, social media, email, applications, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Video and Captioning Guidance<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Preparing video content for accessibility is a daunting component of these changes. If you haven\u2019t already, we recommend <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bsu.edu\/teaching-innovation\/2025\/04\/30\/creating-storing-and-sharing-your-videos-with-panopto\/\"><strong>creating, storing, and sharing your videos with Panopto<\/strong><\/a>, the university-supported video platform at BSU. You can <a href=\"https:\/\/community.instructure.com\/en\/kb\/articles\/664351-how-do-i-use-the-accessibility-checker-in-canvas\"><strong>review this help documentation at Instructure<\/strong><\/a> to learn more about how to use the Accessibility Checker and see images to help you navigate its interface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aside from videos, another major course component to remediate are PDFs, and <a href=\"https:\/\/help.illinoisstate.edu\/accessibility\/website-and-digital\/pdf-accessibility-with-adobe-acrobat-pro\/convert-an-image-only-pdf-with-text-recognition-in-adobe-acrobat-pro\">that remediation is largely done by using Adobe Acrobat<\/a>. Remediating your content initially will be a climb, but once you develop these habits of accessibility, you&#8217;ll reach the level top where it flattens out and gets easier as you have less to remediate. A good example of this is making headings accessible in Microsoft Word by using styles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A common accessibility issue in Word documents is the use of bolded or otherwise styled regular text as headings instead of clicking the \u201cHeading 1\u201d style from the format ribbon. This is an issue because, for screen readers, that heading is interpreted as normal text. When you instead click the &#8220;Heading 1&#8221; button, it inserts a tag in the code that tells the assistive technology, and in turn the user, that the text is a heading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Updating the headings for a series of documents to all use the Heading 1 button <em>is<\/em> tedious and time intensive. However, once you develop the habit of using the Heading 1 button for headings in the first place, you effectively eliminate the need to remediate this issue in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t like the default styles for Microsoft Word headings? Want to use headings that are specific to your discipline\u2019s formatting guidelines? You can <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/office\/change-the-default-settings-for-new-documents-430b4132-e129-46e4-97d2-19c326352c7f\">change the default style settings<\/a> for the documents you create in Microsoft Word!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Be Strategic! You Don\u2019t Have to Eat This Elephant All At Once<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s the best way to eat an elephant? One bite at a time. If you aren\u2019t prepared for it, accessibility is a similarly large, unwieldy beast, but we can get it eaten one bite at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This applies in a couple ways. First, as mentioned above and in the \u201cOne-Item-at-a-Time Workflow,\u201d adopting a step-by-step approach allows you to prioritize your time accordingly. Focus on the easy, \u201cquick wins\u201d in remediating and work your way up to the more complex, technical remediation. The mantra is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cProgress over Perfection.\u201d An 80% accessible course is definitely better than a 0% accessible course because I was too overwhelmed to start.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Second, remember that the digital accessibility rule change is focused on student-facing content used by your learners. Use this to be strategic in your remediation.
