Dr. Kheang\u2019s research reframes that experience.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cMy work examines how feelings of being an \u2018impostor\u2019 can, with the right support, actually catalyze growth and self-awareness, rather than hinder it.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Instead of asking students to \u201cpush through\u201d insecurity alone, her work asks institutions to build systems of belonging around them.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ba0c2f\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2795\" src=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2026\/02\/19131901\/Picture-on-Syracuse-University-Blog-300x238.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"317\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2026\/02\/19131901\/Picture-on-Syracuse-University-Blog-300x238.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2026\/02\/19131901\/Picture-on-Syracuse-University-Blog.jpg 465w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>Scholarship That Travels<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Dr. Kheang\u2019s research is making an impact nationally and internationally.<\/p>\n<p>Her recent publications include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cImpostor Phenomenon and Identity Transformation Among Asian Nontraditional Doctoral Students,\u201d published online-first in the Journal of Transformative Education<\/li>\n<li>\u201cApplication of Andragogy with Graduate Students,\u201d forthcoming in The Currere Exchange Journal<\/li>\n<li>A 2025 book chapter on lifelong learning for rural adults in Thailand and Cambodia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>She regularly presents at national conferences such as the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education and the Adult Education Research Conference, contributing to conversations shaping the future of adult and higher education.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024\u20132025, she received the competitive Alexander N. Charters Adult Education Grants-in-Aid award, which supported a research residency at Syracuse University Libraries. Her public reflection, \u201cExploring the Legacy of Andragogy,\u201d brought that scholarship beyond academia and into public dialogue.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ba0c2f\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2796\" src=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2026\/02\/19131903\/With-BSU-doctoral-students-and-faculty-e1771526595865.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"296\" \/>A \u201cVirtuous Cycle\u201d of Teaching and Research<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>One of Dr. Kheang\u2019s biggest professional insights? Research, teaching, and leadership shouldn\u2019t live in separate lanes.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cEarly on, I recognized that my passion for research, my dedication to teaching, and my leadership in the EdD program couldn&#8217;t exist in silos without sacrificing depth.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Instead, she intentionally connects them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis hasn&#8217;t just been about balance; it&#8217;s been about creating a virtuous cycle where each role strengthens and enlightens the others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her research informs how she mentors doctoral students. Her advising conversations spark new research questions. Each role fuels the other.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ba0c2f\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2797\" src=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2026\/02\/19131906\/With-my-doctoral-advisees-293x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"390\" height=\"400\" \/>Mentoring That Makes a Difference<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>For Dr. Kheang, the most meaningful outcomes aren\u2019t just publications, they\u2019re people.<\/p>\n<p>She is currently co-authoring with doctoral advisee Innocent Ugochukwu on a paper accepted for the 2026 Adult Higher Education Alliance Annual Conference. She is guiding Rachel Campbell through a pilot study and conference proposal exploring women, community, and relational rupture. She is also supporting several additional doctoral students in developing work for peer-reviewed publication.<\/p>\n<p>Since joining Ball State in Fall 2024, she has served on four dissertation committees for students who have successfully defended and graduated.<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s those moments of transformation that matter most.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThere is an incredible joy in those \u2018aha\u2019 moments &#8211; when a student refines a research question, masters a methodological hurdle, or finds their unique academic voice.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Of course, many doctoral students are balancing careers, families, and academic rigor. Supporting them requires flexibility, structure, and deep empathy. But for Dr. Kheang, that work is worth it.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ba0c2f\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2794\" src=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2026\/02\/19131859\/AAACE-Conference-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/>The Joy of Belonging<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>When asked what brings her the most joy, her answer comes back to growth and connection.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe greatest joy springs from witnessing tangible growth and fostering genuine community.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sometimes that joy looks like a conference acceptance email. Sometimes it\u2019s a successful dissertation defense.
