Finding Her Voice at Ball State<\/span><\/h3>\n

Now just a few weeks into her second semester as a freshman, Grace Huff is continuing to find her place at Ball State University, both as a student and as a future educator. Originally from Brownsburg, Indiana, Grace is majoring in Music Education and is a recipient of the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship, which supports students committed to teaching in Indiana schools.<\/p>\n

Grace shared these reflections a few weeks into her first semester, capturing a moment of transition, excitement, and thoughtful self-reflection as she began her college journey.<\/p>\n

A High School Experience Rooted in Music<\/span><\/h3>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Before arriving at Ball State, Grace was deeply involved in music throughout high school. At Brownsburg High School, she was a member of the award-winning show choirs Spotlight Singers and Starlight Voices, as well as Bel Canto, the 2023 ISSMA State Champion Univoice Choir, and Madrigals, the 2024 and 2025 ISSMA State Champion Mixed Choir.<\/p>\n

Those experiences helped shape not only her musical foundation, but also her passion for collaboration, discipline, and performance, skills she now brings into her collegiate studies.<\/p>\n

Why Education Matters<\/span><\/h3>\n

Grace\u2019s desire to become an educator is grounded in empathy and purpose.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always been drawn to the idea of helping others reach their potential,\u201d she shared. \u201cEducation is one of the most powerful tools for transformation, not just academically, but personally and socially.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

She hopes to create learning environments where students feel supported and empowered.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to become an educator because I believe in creating environments where students feel safe to explore ideas, make mistakes, and grow.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Choosing Ball State<\/span><\/h3>\n

\"\"When deciding where to pursue her degree, Grace was drawn to Ball State\u2019s approach to music education.<\/p>\n

\u201cI chose Ball State because the music education program felt like home from the moment I learned about it,\u201d she said. What stood out most was the early emphasis on hands-on learning. \u201cThey let students dive into real classroom experiences starting in the first semester. I didn\u2019t want to wait years before knowing what teaching actually feels like.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

That early exposure continues to affirm her decision as she progresses through her first year.<\/p>\n

Navigating the First Semester<\/span><\/h3>\n

Grace describes her first weeks of college as a mix of excitement and adjustment.<\/p>\n

\u201cStarting college at Ball State has been a mix of excitement, adjustment, and a few unexpected challenges,\u201d she shared, noting that as a music education major, she has also been navigating vocal cord paralysis. \u201cI came in ready to dive into everything\u2026 and while there have definitely been some highlights, I\u2019ve also had to rethink how I approach certain parts of my training.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite those challenges, Grace has found meaningful connection and support. \u201cOne of the biggest positives so far has been connecting with others who are just as passionate about music and teaching,\u201d she said. She has also enjoyed living with her best friend since second grade, a familiar presence during a season of change.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Looking Ahead<\/span><\/h3>\n

As her freshman year continues, Grace is excited about what\u2019s to come.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m looking forward to exploring more in education, especially the hands-on experiences with students,\u201d she shared. \u201cI want to keep growing not just as an educator, but as someone who can inspire and support others.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Now settling into her second semester, she continues to embrace the process, learning how to balance challenges, community, and personal growth.<\/p>\n

Finding Community and Joy<\/span><\/h3>\n

Grace is still exploring campus involvement but plans to join Tri Kappa, following in her mother\u2019s footsteps as a member. Outside of classes, she enjoys spending time with friends, watching musicals (Hamilton is a favorite) and getting creative with crafts and fun makeup looks alongside her roommate.<\/p>\n

\"\"And for a fun fact? Grace is a devoted animal lover. She has four cats, three dogs, and a hermit crab named Queenie. The animals at her mom\u2019s house are named after Star Wars characters, including Leia, Chewie, Anakin, and Padm\u00e9, while the cats at her dad\u2019s house are named Zeus and Zeta. Grace\u2019s cat Joey currently lives with her in the residence hall.<\/p>\n

Looking Forward<\/span><\/h3>\n

As a Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship recipient, Grace Huff is just beginning her journey, but already shows a deep commitment to growth, compassion, and creating supportive learning spaces. With a strong musical background, a reflective mindset, and a passion for helping others thrive, Grace is building a foundation for a meaningful future in education.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
