With a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership and Supervision, Powell graduated in 2009, armed not just with knowledge but with invaluable mentorship and a network that continues to inspire him.

The Power of Mentorship

Reflecting on his time at Ball State, Powell recalls the profound influence of mentoring relationships on his career trajectory.

“One of my most cherished memories from graduate school revolves around the invaluable leadership and mentoring conversations I had with my professors in the Educational Leadership and Supervision Department,” he shares. “These discussions, along with the guidance from the Director of Development and the Muncie Community Schools central office staff, were instrumental in shaping my professional journey.”

One pivotal moment was his introduction to the Economic Club of Indianapolis by the Director of Development. This experience broadened his perspective on strategic partnerships and the importance of community relationships—an ethos he carries forward in his professional life. Powell’s story underscores the critical role mentorship plays in bridging theoretical knowledge with real-world application, a principle well-documented in leadership research.

A Career Dedicated to Equity in Education

Today, Powell is a champion for equitable education in Virginia, where he oversees Title I and Title IV programs. His work ensures that schools and departments receiving federal funds adhere to strict guidelines while maximizing their impact on students. Title I funds, for example, aim to close educational achievement gaps by providing all children with access to high-quality education. Meanwhile, Title IV funds enhance students’ academic experiences through well-rounded education, safe learning environments, and effective technology use.

For the 42 schools receiving Title I funds, this means adhering to mandates that supplement, not supplant, existing resources. His efforts not only create a supportive environment where every student can thrive, but it also epitomizes the strategic and collaborative leadership he first cultivated at Ball State.

Lessons from Ball State

Powell attributes much of his success to the practical, experience-driven education he received at Ball State. The university’s emphasis on real-world applications prepared him to navigate the complexities of public education, while its culture of mentorship fostered lasting relationships that continue to guide him.

“The university’s commitment to having professors with practical experience brought a wealth of real-world knowledge into the classroom. This approach helped bridge the gap between theoretical concepts and practical application, making the research and text we studied more relevant and impactful,” he says.

Beyond academics, the community at Ball State nurtured his growth as a leader, reinforcing the importance of collaboration and equity—values that are central to his professional philosophy.

A Legacy of Relationships

Among Powell’s proudest achievements from his time at Ball State are the genuine relationships he built with professors, peers, and mentors. These connections not only enriched his academic journey but also laid the groundwork for his professional network.

“At Ball State, the emphasis on building a supportive community and fostering meaningful interactions helped me develop a network that continues to support me in my career,” he reflects. “These relationships have been instrumental in my professional growth and have provided a foundation of trust and collaboration that I rely on daily.”

Finding Joy and Balance

Outside of his professional endeavors, Powell finds joy in the simple, yet profound moments spent with his children, friends, and family. “These connections are a source of strength and happiness,” he shares. Research supports his sentiment, highlighting the importance of strong social bonds for emotional well-being and resilience—a truth Powell lives every day.

Advice for the Next Generation

To current students, Powell offers wisdom drawn from his own journey:

“Find something that grounds you—whether it’s your faith, core values, or another source of strength. Surround yourself with people who uplift and inspire you, and ensure you have strong mentors who can provide guidance and support.”

He also emphasizes the value of continuous learning and resilience.

“If you find that you are the strongest person in your group, it might be time to seek out new connections that challenge and motivate you to grow. Engaging with diverse perspectives and experiences can enrich your understanding and help you develop resilience. Remember, college is not just about academic learning but also about personal growth and building a network that will support you throughout your life.”

A Lasting Impact

Victor Leon Powell’s story is a testament to the transformative power of education and mentorship.
