Teachers College proudly honors Dr. Luis Orozco, recipient of the 2025 Outstanding Alumni Award, which recognizes alumni who have made significant contributions to their field and society. A 2023 graduate of Ball State’s Doctor of Education in Adult, Community, and Higher Education program, with a cognate in Information and Communication Sciences, Dr. Orozco exemplifies how academic excellence and community impact can intersect to create meaningful change.
Today, he serves as an Assistant Professor at Ball State’s Center for Information and Communication Sciences (CICS) in the College of Communication, Information, and Media (CCIM). His work bridges education, technology, and community collaboration.
Leading at the Intersection of Technology and Education
Dr. Orozco’s teaching and research center on how emerging technologies, especially artificial intelligence, can be effectively integrated into higher education and small- and medium-sized enterprises. He leads student-centered research projects, advises graduate students, and partners with local businesses to find practical solutions for complex challenges.
“My teaching style is based on real-world application, often using case-based learning to prepare students to lead at the intersection of technology, people, and organizations,” he explained.
This forward-thinking approach, shaped by Ball State’s immersive learning culture, reflects his belief in connecting classroom theory to community and industry practice.
A Foundation Built at Ball State
Dr. Orozco credits his success to the mentorship and collaborative spirit he found at Teachers College.
“The support from all faculty and staff in the Educational Studies department was critical for my success,” he shared. “Ball State’s commitment to immersive learning and innovation played a critical role in shaping my approach as an educator and industry-oriented researcher.”
During his time as a student, he cherished opportunities to share his research with others through student symposiums and community engagement.
“The excitement of sharing my research with others and seeing how many students care about informing and educating the community through research is one of the best memories,” he said.
He also volunteered at the Ross Community Center, an experience he described as transformative and central to understanding community needs.
Advice for Future Educators
When asked what advice he would share with current students or those considering a career in education, Dr. Orozco emphasized curiosity, collaboration, and real-world impact.
“Use every assignment, project, or classroom activity opportunity to develop ideas for real-world applications,” he advised. “Collaborate with faculty and peers as if they were your professional partners. A research paper can evolve into a conference presentation, and a classroom discussion might uncover a community need that becomes the basis for a grant proposal.”
He reminds students that the program offers valuable opportunities to build transferable skills: research, communication, collaboration, and problem-solving, that serve them well across industries.
A Journey That Comes Full Circle
After earning his doctorate, Dr. Orozco’s path came full circle when he returned to Ball State as a faculty member.
“That transition has been one of the most meaningful in my life,” he reflected. “I am grateful to the faculty and mentors who inspired me and shaped my journey as an educator and professional.”
He offered special gratitude to several mentors: Dr. Michelle Dudka, Dr. Michael Ndemanu, Dr. Regina Giraldo-García, and Dr. Peter Murk, each of whom played an important role in guiding his professional and academic development.
