Inspired by Teachers, Driven by Literature
For Batesville, Indiana native Alivia McConnell, becoming an educator feels like the natural next step after years of being inspired by the teachers who shaped her.
“I have always loved my teachers and felt inspired by how hard working and kind they were,” she says. “As I grew older and fell in love with literature, I knew I wanted to pursue that area of study and become a literature professor.”
Alivia, a 2025 graduate of Batesville High School, is beginning her journey at Ball State University this fall as an English/Language Arts Education major. She is also a proud recipient of the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship, a competitive award that provides up to $10,000 per year to high-achieving Indiana students who commit to teaching in the state for at least five years after graduation.
Finding Her Place at Ball State
When it came time to choose a college, Alivia was looking for a school that combined strong academic programs with a welcoming campus.
“I chose Ball State because it is in Indiana and I knew it was known for its liberal arts and teaching programs,” she says. “After I had my tour, I fell in love with the campus and decided that’s where I wanted to go.”
Excited for What’s Ahead
This fall, Alivia is eager to meet her professors, build connections, and get involved in campus activities.
“I can’t wait to establish my new routine and daily schedule,” she says. “I’m also excited to make new friends and get involved with different things on campus.”
Passions Beyond the Classroom
When she’s not studying, Alivia enjoys a variety of hobbies: reading, writing, spending time in nature, listening to music, crocheting, coloring, and relaxing with her dog.
And one thing you should know? She’s a lifelong Coca-Cola fan. “I LOVE Coca-Cola and I was devastated when I found out Ball State is a Pepsi school,” she says with a laugh. “I even visited the Coca-Cola Factory in Atlanta, Georgia over the summer.”
With her deep love of literature and commitment to inspiring future students, Alivia is ready to make the most of her time at Ball State and prepare for a career that will make a lasting impact.
