Creating Safe Spaces for Learning and Growth

For Maya Sells, becoming an educator means more than teaching lessons, it means building a classroom where students are safe to learn, feel, and think freely. This Waterloo, Indiana native is heading to Ball State University to major in Elementary Education, with a minor in Religious Studies, and she’s already making an impact in the field.

“I want to be an educator so that I can create a safe space for my students to learn, feel, and think freely,” Maya says.

Maya is also a recipient of the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship, a prestigious, renewable scholarship that provides up to $10,000 per year for four years to high-achieving students who commit to teaching in Indiana for five years after graduation. With that support, she’s eager to begin her journey at Ball State’s Teachers College.

A Creative and Community-Minded Leader

Throughout high school, Maya stayed involved in activities that nurtured her creativity and leadership skills. She was active in show choir, school theater, student government, and community theater, where she built confidence and a love for collaborative environments.

She’s currently gaining hands-on experience working at a Montessori preschool, which has strengthened her desire to pursue a career in education and further developed her understanding of how to support young learners.

Choosing Connection and Community at Ball State

Maya was drawn to Ball State by the welcoming atmosphere and beautiful campus.

“I chose Ball State because of the beautiful campus and welcoming and engaging faculty,” she shares.

As she looks forward to her first semester, she’s especially excited about getting involved on campus. “I’m most excited about meeting new people and joining clubs surrounding the things I care about,” she says.

A Maker at Heart

When it’s time to unwind, Maya enjoys diving into creative projects. “I love to read, and I also enjoy crafting,” she says. “Embroidery, knitting, coloring, and sewing all help me to relax.” Her love for creating reflects the patience and joy she’s sure to bring to the classroom.

Rooted in Care and Creativity

Maya is stepping into Ball State ready to build a classroom culture rooted in trust, expression, and support. With her experience, creativity, and heart for students, she’s poised to make a powerful impact in Indiana’s schools.

Welcome to Ball State, Maya!
