Are you ready to embark on a journey that will not only transform you as an educator, but also broaden your horizons in ways you never imagined? Look no further than Ball State University’s EDEL-O England program, which is designed to immerse you in a variety of British education experiences while also providing exceptional chances for personal and professional development.

EDEL-O England

Since its inception in 1972, Elementary Education Overseas/England (EDEL-O/England) has been at the forefront of revolutionizing pre-service teacher education. Grounded in the belief that international teaching and travel experiences are essential for professional development, this program offers a unique blend of classroom learning, hands-on experience, and cultural exploration.

Participants in the EDEL-O England program have the chance to experience teaching in local primary schools, learning from British educational experts and embarking on organized trips throughout the United Kingdom. Research has shown that such experiences not only enhance one’s appreciation for diversity, but also cultivate a deeper understanding of cultural nuances, crucial skills for navigating the increasingly diverse landscape of modern education.

In addition to immersing themselves in British culture, students also complete a practicum in a British primary school, earning credit for courses such as EDEL/EDRD 300 or EDEL/EDRD 350. This immersive, experiential learning opportunity shows the importance of contextual knowledge in shaping education, encouraging students to explore their own cultural lenses and incorporate this understanding into their educational practices.

EDEL-O in London- Elevating Learning Beyond Borders

Building upon the success of the EDEL-O England program, the EDEL-O program takes place in London, which offers students a unique opportunity to explore elementary education beyond the confines of the classroom and across the globe.

Led by esteemed faculty members, these high-impact courses are taught internationally, often during summer sessions or full semesters. In June 2024, a group of Ball State students embarked on a five-week study abroad experience focused on Elementary Education in the vibrant city of London, England.

Key highlights of the program include:

Internships in London Schools

Participants had the chance to intern in schools in London, gaining practical experience and insights into the British educational system. From lesson planning to classroom management, this hands-on experience deepened understandings of educational practices in a global context.

Cultural Exploration

Beyond the classroom, participants immersed themselves in British culture and explored iconic landmarks, savoring traditional cuisine, and compared educational practices between the United Kingdom and the United States. This cultural immersion broadened perspectives and enriched understanding of the world.

Feedback From Past Participants

Brittany Noyer says her involvement with the EDEL-O program in 2019 extends well beyond the classroom. It was important for her not only to grow academically, but also to develop personally and culturally. Living in a new nation taught Brittany vital lessons about flexibility, resilience, and independence.

Klarysa Hawrot, another 2019 participant of the program also had glowing remarks about the experience.

“The program impacted me because you don’t get this experience and this kind of connection with the kids any other time.”

Lauren Otinger expressed how the experience helped her understand culturally responsive teaching. She points out the significance of recognizing and accepting cultural differences in the classroom, which not only improved her efficiency as a teacher but also enriched her as a person. She praised the trip’s supportive professors and companions for helping her grow and become a better educator and individual.

Led by Ball State Faculty

During Summer 2024, the program was led by Janet Jenkins, a faculty member from the Department of Elementary Education. With her expertise and guidance, students navigated through the complexities of international education, ensuring that the learning experiences were enriching, engaging, and unforgettable.

50th EXEL-O Reunion

The EDEL-O program was originally created in 1972 as EXEL-O, Experimental Elementary Overseas. You’re invited to join the EXEL-O 50th reunion gathering in Teachers College room 1008 on October 12 from 1:30-3:00 p.m. Gayle Kimmell, class of 1976 alum was a student in the EXEL-O program in 1974, and she has organized this gathering.

Kimmell still thinks very fondly of her time in the EXEL-O program:

“In the fall of 1974, a group of 30 students in the EXEL-O program went to England to observe, teach, and tour the continent. It was a very special experience and one that affected us for the rest of our lives. Two years ago, our sponsor faculty member, Dr. Betty Pogue Hadely, passed away. We all contributed toward a tree planting event in her name outside the Teacher’s College.”
