Taking Center Stage at Ball State
Now well into the spring semester of her junior year, Katie Blessinger continues to embrace the fast-paced, creative journey of life at Ball State University. Originally from Garrett, Indiana, Katie is majoring in Theatre Education with a minor in Technical Theatre, and she is a recipient of the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship, supporting future educators across Indiana.
Katie shared these reflections early in the fall semester, capturing a moment when her junior year was just beginning, full of momentum, challenge, and excitement for what was ahead.
Inspired to Be in Students’ Corner
Katie’s passion for teaching is deeply personal, shaped by the impact of a mentor who believed in her.
“My high school theatre director is my biggest inspiration for why I want to become a teacher,” she shared. “She always encouraged me and made a huge impact on my life, and I want students to always have someone in their corner.”
That commitment to encouragement and support continues to guide her path as she prepares for a future in the classroom.
Choosing a Top Program
Katie knew she wanted a program that would challenge and prepare her for success in theatre education.
“Ball State has one of the top theatre education programs in the country,” she said.
That reputation, and the hands-on opportunities that come with it, has helped shape her experience as both a student and an emerging educator.
A Whirlwind Experience
Reflecting on her time at Ball State so far, Katie describes it as dynamic and full of growth.
“My life at Ball State has been a whirlwind, and I feel like I have lived twelve different lives here so far,” she said.
Along the way, she has navigated challenges that come with a rigorous college schedule.
“I have been challenged with time management, difficult classes, early classes, and many other things,” she shared. Still, those challenges are balanced by meaningful moments she continues to cherish.
“I have cherished every moment here that I possibly can. The late nights with my roommates, going on walks around campus, meeting new people, the list goes on.”
Advice for New Students
Looking back on her journey, Katie offers advice grounded in both experience and perspective.
“Enjoy it, go out and do things with your friends, put yourself out there, join a club, laugh and have fun, but also work hard and have a goal.”
It’s a reminder to embrace both the fun and the responsibility that come with college life.
Looking Toward the Future
Katie already has a clear vision for what she hopes to accomplish after graduation.
“After graduation, I would really like to go back to my high school and establish an accredited drama department with classes,” she shared. “We only had an afterschool drama program, and I would like to implement theatre classes as a fine arts credit.”
Her goal reflects a passion not only for teaching, but for expanding access to the arts.
Finding Community Through Involvement
Katie has built strong connections through her involvement with the Ball State University Singers, where she has participated for three years, two as a glee club member and one as an administrative assistant.
These experiences have allowed her to grow as both a performer and a leader while building lasting relationships within the campus community.
Life Beyond the Stage
Outside of her academic and performance commitments, Katie enjoys reading, dancing, and spending time with her cat, Socks. And for a fun fact? She collects keychains, and has amassed a collection of more than 100.
Learning by Doing
Some of Katie’s most meaningful experiences have come through hands-on opportunities in schools.
“I love my theatre practicums where I get to work in schools with kids on a production,” she shared.
These moments bring together her passion for theatre and education, reinforcing her confidence as she prepares for her future career.
Looking Ahead
As she continues through the spring semester of her junior year, Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship recipient Katie Blessinger is building a future rooted in creativity, mentorship, and impact. With a passion for theatre and a commitment to supporting students, she is preparing to step into classrooms where every student feels encouraged, supported, and seen.
