Helping Others, One Student at a Time
Kayla Sankey has always found joy in helping others, and now she’s bringing that passion to the classroom. A proud native of Waynetown, Indiana, Kayla is heading to Ball State University to major in Elementary Education with a concentration in math, ready to begin her journey toward shaping future generations.
“I want to be an educator because I love helping others,” she says. “I hope to make an impact on future students.”
Kayla is a recipient of the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship, a prestigious, renewable scholarship offering up to $10,000 per year for four years to high-achieving students who commit to teaching in Indiana for five years after graduation.
From the Pool to the Show Ring
Kayla brings a unique blend of responsibility, leadership, and rural pride to her college experience. As a member of 4-H, she shows beef cattle at the county and state fair, a tradition that’s helped her build a strong work ethic and sense of community.
In addition to livestock showing, she works as a lifeguard and swim instructor, helping children build confidence and stay safe in the water. Her leadership in and out of the pool has helped prepare her to lead a classroom with care and clarity.
Finding Her Place at Ball State
Kayla was drawn to Ball State for its welcoming campus and top-tier teacher preparation.
“I loved the community feel and environment at Ball State, as well as the teaching program,” she says.
Now, she’s looking forward to the friendships and adventures ahead. “I’m excited for new experiences and meeting new people,” Kayla shares.
A Well-Rounded Learner with a Surprise Swing
When it’s time to unwind, Kayla enjoys reading, listening to music, swimming, and of course, showing livestock. And she recently added a new hobby to the mix—golf.
“I started playing my senior year of high school and got a hole in one with only four months of experience!” she says.
Committed to Making a Difference
Whether in the classroom, the pool, or the show ring, Kayla is dedicated, determined, and ready to lead. We’re proud to welcome her to Ball State’s Teachers College and can’t wait to see the impact she’ll make in Indiana’s schools.
