Inspiring Through Words and the Stage
For Elizabeth (Lizzie) Buchs, the classroom is where creativity, connection, and transformation come to life. This Waterloo, Indiana native is heading to Ball State University to major in English Education, with plans to potentially minor in theatrical directing. Her goal? To inspire students the way her own teachers inspired her.
“My dream is to inspire and make a positive difference in the lives of many, and there is no better place to do that than in the classroom,” Lizzie shares. “Teachers are some of the most influential and inspirational people in our society… I want nothing more than to encourage my future students to dream big.”
Lizzie is a recipient of the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship, a competitive, renewable scholarship that awards up to $10,000 per year for four years to Indiana students who commit to teaching in the state for five years after graduation.
Theatre, Music, and a Passion for Expression
Throughout high school, Lizzie was deeply involved in the arts. She participated in 17 different theater productions, taking on roles as an actor, stage manager, student director, and student choreographer. Her passion for performance also extended to competitive show choir, advanced concert choir, a cappella jazz choir, and glee club.
She balanced her creative commitments with academic excellence, participating in National Honor Society and Academic Spell Bowl, a reflection of her love for language and lifelong learning.
A Perfect Fit at Ball State
When it came time to choose a university, Lizzie found everything she was looking for in Ball State.
“Vibrant student life, a beautiful campus, and, above all, a phenomenal English department!” she says.
As she looks ahead to the fall semester, she’s most excited about what the future holds.
“By furthering my education, I am opening new doors with new opportunities, and I cannot wait to discover what this new chapter has in store for me.”
Reading, Writing, and Recharging
When she’s not on stage or immersed in literature, Lizzie enjoys activities that help her unwind, like reading, writing, organizing, and playing board games. “I often clean my room or around the house when I’m stressed,” she admits. “It helps me focus.”
Rooted in Family and Future-Focused
Lizzie is the second oldest of five siblings, and her desire to nurture and support others runs deep. With her creativity, compassion, and love of learning, she’s ready to take center stage in the lives of her future students.
