Shaping Students and Strengthening Communities

For Charles Schackow, education isn’t just about academic growth, it’s about helping students discover their passions and become productive, empowered citizens. The LaGrange, Indiana native and incoming Ball State student is majoring in Social Studies Education, with the goal of inspiring future generations in and beyond the classroom.

“While teaching academics is a goal, helping create productive citizens in society is my mission,” Charles explains.

Charles is a recipient of the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship, a competitive, renewable scholarship that awards up to $10,000 each year for four academic years to high-achieving students who commit to teaching in Indiana for five years after graduation. With this support, Charles is ready to pursue his mission of guiding students toward bright futures.

A Leader On and Off the Field

Charles brings a strong background in teamwork and leadership to his future role as an educator. In high school, he participated in football, basketball, track and field, and golf, serving as team captain in football and basketball during his upperclassman years. His involvement didn’t stop at athletics, he was also a member of National Honor Society, Student Council, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes, experiences that helped him grow as a well-rounded and service-minded leader.

Choosing a Community of Educators

When it came time to choose a university, Ball State stood out.

“I chose Ball State because of the excellent Teachers College and the community I will be surrounded by,” he says. “There are so many opportunities to learn and build connections with great people.”

As he looks ahead to the fall semester, Charles is most excited to meet new people and explore new opportunities on campus.

Family, Fun, and a Twin Twist

When he’s not studying or preparing to lead a classroom, Charles enjoys playing sports and spending time with his friends and family. And in a fun twist he won’t be the only Schackow on campus. “I have a twin sister who is also attending Ball State,” he shares.

Preparing to Lead with Purpose

With a clear sense of purpose and a heart for mentorship, Charles is stepping confidently into his future as an educator. We’re proud to welcome him and can’t wait to see the impact he’ll make in Indiana schools.

Welcome to Ball State, Charles!
