Believing in the Power of Encouragement

For Yorktown native Sophie Gernand, becoming a teacher is about more than academics, it’s about support, encouragement, and helping students believe in themselves. As she prepares to study Elementary Education at Ball State University this fall, Sophie is already thinking about the kind of classroom she wants to create.

“I want to help grow young minds and be there for the kids who need somebody to believe in them,” she says.

Sophie is a recipient of the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship, a competitive and renewable award that provides up to $10,000 each year for up to four years to high-achieving students who commit to teaching in Indiana for at least five years after graduation. With that support, Sophie is ready to begin her journey to becoming the kind of teacher who makes a lasting impact.

An Active High School Leader

A 2025 graduate of Yorktown High School, Sophie stayed active throughout her high school career, participating in swim and dive, track and field, and managing the boys tennis team. “I absolutely loved track and tennis,” she shares.

She also made time to get involved in clubs such as DECA, Student Council, and FCCLA, experiences that helped shape her leadership and communication skills.

Following in Family Footsteps

Sophie didn’t have to look far when choosing where to continue her education.

“I chose Ball State because my family went there, it’s close to home, and I love the campus!” she says. As she looks ahead to her first semester, she’s especially excited for “new experiences and new people.”

Baking, Games, and Narwhals

When it’s time to relax, Sophie enjoys baking, playing games, and spending time with the people she loves. And her fun fact? “I love narwhals,” proving she’s already got the fun and whimsical energy to brighten any elementary classroom.

Ready to Make a Difference

With her heart set on helping students feel seen and supported, Sophie is stepping into Ball State’s Teachers College with purpose. We can’t wait to see how she grows, and how she helps others grow, too.

Welcome to Ball State, Sophie!
