Creating Confidence in the Classroom

Delia McClain knows that math can be intimidating—but she’s on a mission to change that. A soon-to-be Ball State Cardinal from Berne, Indiana, Delia plans to major in Mathematics Teaching (Secondary School Concentration) and build a classroom environment where students feel confident, supported, and empowered.

“I’m passionate about math and fascinated by the different ways students approach problems,” she says. “My teachers believed in me when I needed it most, and now I want to do the same for others—especially in a subject that so many find intimidating.”

Delia is also a recipient of the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship, a competitive scholarship that offers up to $10,000 per year for four years in exchange for a five-year teaching commitment in Indiana. She joins a distinguished cohort of future teachers who are committed to building brighter futures in Hoosier classrooms.

Leadership, Expression, and Teamwork

Throughout high school, Delia stayed busy and well-rounded. She played soccer all four years—serving as team captain her senior year—and was president of the National Honor Society. She also sang in choir, joined the chess club, stayed active in her art classes, and supported school spirit efforts through student council work.

Now, she’s ready to bring that same passion and leadership to Ball State.

“I chose Ball State because of its strong math education program and hands-on teaching opportunities,” she explains. “The supportive community and welcoming campus made it feel like the perfect place for me to grow as a future teacher.”

Running, Art, and Creative Connections

When she’s not solving equations or leading in the classroom, Delia finds balance through art and movement.

“Running clears my mind and helps me set goals, while drawing and painting let me express myself creatively,” she says. She also cherishes time with loved ones—and has even combined connection and creativity in an unexpected way: “I love tattoos and have even given some to others. It’s a way I express creativity and build connections, which inspires me as I work toward becoming a teacher.”

Inspired to Inspire

As she begins her college journey, Delia is most excited about learning from experienced professors, gaining real classroom experience, and meeting new people who share her passion for education. With a clear vision and genuine enthusiasm, she’s well on her way to becoming the kind of teacher who changes lives.

Welcome to Ball State, Delia!
