At Ball State University, excellence and dedication define our students and alumni. One such individual is Tolulope Samuel Aworefa, a PhD candidate in Educational Psychology. With a deep passion for research and mentorship, Aworefa is making strides in understanding perfectionism and mental health in diverse cultural contexts.

A Journey to Ball State

Even from the other side of the world in Nigeria, Ball State seemed like the perfect place for Aworefa to further his education.

“I chose Ball State because of the strong reputation of the Teachers College on academic excellence and the personalized attention it offers students. Secondly, my interaction with Dr. Fletcher via Zoom when I was in Nigeria gave me a strong feeling that Ball State is the right place for me,” he shares.

His decision has since been reaffirmed through his enriching experiences at the university.

Engaging Academic Experience

For Aworefa, Ball State’s collaborative academic environment has been especially impactful.

“My favorite experience at Ball State has been the incredible interactions I’ve had with my professors and the collaboration in writing academic papers. Their willingness to engage in meaningful discussions, both in and outside of class, inspired me to push beyond my comfort zone.”

These experiences have broadened his academic perspectives and deepened his passion for research.

Passion for Education and Psychology

Aworefa’s desire to empower adolescents drives his pursuit of a career in education. “My motivation to pursue a career stems from my passion for helping adolescents grow and reach their potential.” His research explores the psychological impacts of perfectionism across different cultural backgrounds.

“My current research focuses on perfectionism and mental health; particularly how cultural and environmental factors shape perfectionistic tendencies and their psychological outcomes. I’m particularly interested in understanding how family dynamics, societal expectations, and psychological experiences influence perfectionism in adolescents across cultures,” he explains.

His interest in this topic was sparked by observing mental health trends in various cultural settings, particularly within African communities.

“While perfectionism is often viewed through a Western psychological lens, I noticed significant cultural variations in its development and outcomes in the African context.”

Looking Ahead: A Future in Academia

With his expected graduation in 2028, Aworefa already has plans for what to do after earning his doctorate. “I plan to stay in academia as both a researcher and lecturer as I find solutions to academic issues relating to psychology.” His dedication to advancing knowledge and mentoring future scholars underscores his commitment to education.
