She spent four summers laboring over&nbsp;every&nbsp;page, sentence, and word.&nbsp;\u201cI pretty much work on it every summer,\u201d Celia shared. \u201cIt\u2019s such a summer novel to me.\u201d&nbsp;The ambitious reimagining of Greek mythology blends myth and the contemporary with a deep attention to place. With support from the Aspire Grant, Celia was able to bring the world of the novel to life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>To Kiss the Moon<\/em>&nbsp;follows seven queer women on a quest to save the goddess Artemis. The novel is told through multiple points of view and centers LGBTQ+ and BIPOC characters. Celia&nbsp;finalized&nbsp;the manuscript in the final year of her master\u2019s&nbsp;program.&nbsp;While the story draws from&nbsp;myth,&nbsp;its setting is firmly rooted in Nebraska. The Aspire Grant enabled Celia to travel to Nebraska and immerse herself in the environment, gaining firsthand experience of the terrain, communities, and cultural context that shape the narrative.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"525\" height=\"348\" src=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2026\/02\/17165648\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-714\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2026\/02\/17165648\/image-1.png 525w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2026\/02\/17165648\/image-1-300x199.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Image by&nbsp;Mikayla&nbsp;Galgerud&nbsp;<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most significant locations in the book is&nbsp;Carhenge, a replica of Stonehenge made from vintage cars.&nbsp;Carhenge&nbsp;became&nbsp;the site of a major battle and ritual scene involving witchcraft.&nbsp;Visiting it in person completely changed how she understood both the location and the state.&nbsp;The landscape,&nbsp;which was initially flat in her novel,&nbsp;transformed&nbsp;into a&nbsp;lush, hilly background.&nbsp;\u201cYou can only capture so much from Google images,\u201d she said. \u201cActually&nbsp;going to the site location was life-changing for me.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"411\" height=\"546\" src=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2026\/02\/17165648\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-713\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2026\/02\/17165648\/image.png 411w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2026\/02\/17165648\/image-226x300.png 226w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 411px) 100vw, 411px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Image by&nbsp;Mikayla&nbsp;Galgerud<\/em>&nbsp;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Learning from people who live in the area added depth to her characters and helped the world of the novel feel lived-in rather than imagined from a distance.&nbsp;The trip transformed one of her characters, Inez, a Nebraska native. \u201cShe went from 2D to 3D from going on this trip,\u201d Celia explained.&nbsp;Celia\u2019s understanding of the differences&nbsp;between the political landscape in Omaha&nbsp;and the rest of the state\u2014the dissonances and the overlaps\u2014informed how her character, an Omaha native,&nbsp;interacted with her&nbsp;sexuality.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond travel, the Aspire Grant gave Celia something just as valuable: time.&nbsp;During the road trip, she read the novel aloud to her friend chapter by chapter, receiving feedback and identifying areas to expand or clarify.&nbsp;\u201cBy being given the time to actually talk with someone step by step, I was able to&nbsp;revise to&nbsp;a much stronger project,\u201d she said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Writing across multiple identities also&nbsp;required&nbsp;careful research and self-reflection. In developing characters from different racial and cultural backgrounds, including a Black character named Kayla, Celia was intentional about avoiding stereotypes and harmful tropes. She spent time reading across perspectives and examining her own assumptions to ensure that each character was treated with complexity and care. This commitment to responsible representation is central to the project and to Celia\u2019s broader creative practice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Celia learned about the Aspire Grant through her professors and her mentor, Dr. Katy&nbsp;Didden, who guided her through the application. The funding&nbsp;provided valuable support and time, helping&nbsp;Celia create a story world that felt&nbsp;authentic.&nbsp;Now, Celia has begun querying&nbsp;<em>To Kiss the Moon<\/em>&nbsp;to literary agents and is actively pursuing publication.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For students considering applying&nbsp;to&nbsp;Aspire&nbsp;Grants, Celia\u2019s advice is simple and sincere:&nbsp;\u201cGo for it. You never know what is possible unless you try.\u201d&nbsp;She encourages applicants not to be afraid to \u201cshoot for the moon,\u201d to start early, and to reach out to professors for support.
