{"id":51,"date":"2017-10-06T10:22:02","date_gmt":"2017-10-06T14:22:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bsu.edu\/research\/?p=51"},"modified":"2019-11-19T14:45:55","modified_gmt":"2019-11-19T19:45:55","slug":"monitoring-athletic-potential-on-earth-and-in-space","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bsu.edu\/research\/2017\/10\/06\/monitoring-athletic-potential-on-earth-and-in-space\/","title":{"rendered":"Monitoring Athletic Potential on Earth and in Space"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5><span class=\"rteText-primary\">Outstanding Researcher of the Year<\/span><\/h5>\n<p>Nearly 30 years ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsu.edu\/academics\/centersandinstitutes\/hpl\/people\/facultydirectory\/faculty\/trappescott\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Scott Trappe<\/a>, this year\u2019s Outstanding Researcher of the Year Award winner, started thinking about where he would get his doctorate degree. As a masters student at the University of Colorado, he turned to his advisors for help. \u201cI loved physiology and hoped I might make a career out of my interests in sport and exercise physiology.\u00a0 So, I asked the advice of my Colorado advisors who were all graduates of the Ball State\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsu.edu\/academics\/centersandinstitutes\/hpl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Human Performance Laboratory.<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<div id=\"attachment_52\" style=\"width: 299px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52\" class=\" wp-image-52\" src=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/19\/2019\/04\/02102003\/full-body-shot-of-runner.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Scott Trappe observes a cardio respiratory fitness test taken by Kevin Griece.\" width=\"289\" height=\"220\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-52\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Scott Trappe observes a cardiorespiratory<br \/>fitness test taken by Kevin Griece.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h5><span class=\"rteText-primary\">The road forward<\/span><\/h5>\n<p>Trappe was accepted into Ball State\u2019s Laboratory\u2019s Ph.D. program in 1991 and has never looked back. Shortly after arriving, the Human Performance Lab (HPL) in the School of Kinesiology began a relationship with the NASA Space Shuttle program. \u201cWhen we got involved with NASA, which was for my post-doctoral work, our contribution was based on our expertise in studying the generative wasting effects on muscle during weightlessness in space\u201d<\/p>\n<h5><span class=\"rteText-primary\">The perfect match<\/span><\/h5>\n<p>Dr. Dave Costill, a retired professor, and the founding Director of HPL brought Trappe to BSU.\u00a0 \u201cI kept him on as a post-doc and that was during the period when we were doing a lot of the space shuttle research. He and I traveled a lot together. I knew his philosophy. I could see that he and I were so much alike. That it was a perfect match,\u201d said Costill.<br \/>\nCostill and Trappe worked together on the NASA project. \u201cWe\u2019re trying to help NASA design the best exercise to maintain astronaut health while they\u2019re in space. That started with the space shuttle flight, that was two weeks long and then that became an integral part of our work with the International Space Station, which requires the astronauts to stay in space for more than six months,\u201d Trappe said.<\/p>\n<h5><span class=\"rteText-primary\">The NASA research<\/span><\/h5>\n<p>Specifically, Trappe and his students study muscle biopsies from the astronauts. Trappe said they are looking for the sweet spot \u2013 training the crew like athletes while not overdoing it. \u201cOver the years, we have developed some special training protocols and have helped inform NASA as to what counter measure should be taken to prevent the loss of strength and endurance while in space.\u201d\u00a0The exercise benefits research<\/p>\n<p>Trappe and his team aren\u2019t just working with NASA. They\u2019re also embarking on a new longitudinal study with the National Institutes of Health (NIH). \u201cNIH has invested $170 million to uncover the biological and genetic benefits of exercise.\u00a0 We know exercise is good for you, but we don\u2019t know how it works at the genetic level.\u00a0 Those studies will be the focus of our work for six years or more. In concert with NIH and several other research institutions, we are in the planning phase with the whole study.\u201d<\/p>\n<h5><span class=\"rteText-primary\">His true motivation<\/span><\/h5>\n<p>In his career at Ball State, Trappe has received $18 million in research funding. It is something he\u2019s proud of but he will tell you that isn\u2019t his motivation. \u201cResearch is expensive but it provides us the opportunity to pursue some interesting questions. I\u2019ve always been passionate about the science and not the money. Funding only seems to come when we generate worthy ideas. I would have never dreamt when I was getting started that we would receive the types of large grants that we have received,\u201d Trappe said.<\/p>\n<h5><span class=\"rteText-primary\">Cutting edge research<\/span><\/h5>\n<p>The man he replaced as the director sees Trappe as a talented teacher, mentor, and researcher who is deserving of the award Outstanding Researcher of the Year. \u201cHis work is at the cutting edge of science, which involves competing for grant money against places like Harvard and Stanford and the Mayo Clinic. His team is at the top of the list. I can\u2019t say enough good things about his team,\u201d said Costill.<\/p>\n<h5><span class=\"rteText-primary\">It\u2019s a team approach<\/span><\/h5>\n<p>Trappe said, \u201cIt\u2019s an honor to receive this recognition from Ball State University, but I really look at it as an honor for the lab because it\u2019s a team approach. I\u2019m surrounded by great people that are working hard. Some people may not see the team effort that research requires.\u00a0 The results reflect the productivity of a lot of people over many years.
