The tagline \u201cTake time to be a dad today\u201d is an ongoing effort to get dads to play an active role in their children\u2019s lives.<\/p>\n

An all in dad\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Former BSU basketball star Malik Perry didn\u2019t need a commercial to tell him to be an involved dad.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m one of those all in dads. I got to be all in. This is my first son, my first child, her first child.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The now 30-year-old Perry worked as a social worker for Children\u2019s Real Father Engagement of Indianapolis which offered two weeks paternity leave when Perry\u2019s son Malikai Jamal was born a year ago. He didn\u2019t hesitate to take it. \u201cI just like bonding. They speak about the bonding time for a mother and son or mother and daughter and that skin to skin contact. I just felt I wanted that same bonding experience.\u201d<\/p>\n

New fatherhood<\/span><\/h5>\n

That bonding experience between parent and child is important according to Ball State University sociology professor Dr. Richard Petts<\/a>. \u201cWe\u2019ve seen the shift over time, 20-30 years that fathers shouldn\u2019t just be breadwinners, sort of 1950 Leave It To Beaver kind of family but share in the caregiving. Today it\u2019s called \u201cNew Fatherhood\u201d in the literature. The idea that fathers should be involved, they should be nurturing, they should be caring, they should want to spend time with their families and not just be the provider.\u201d
\nPetts\u2019 interest in this area grew from looking into Ball State\u2019s paternity policy nearly five years ago. He learned then he could take a couple of days off for the birth of his son, but any more than that would require a note from his wife\u2019s doctor. At the time, BSU didn\u2019t have a family leave policy. That has since changed (see Behind the Story…). A lightbulb went off for Petts that this was his next project. In his preliminary research, he discovered no one had really looked into paternity leave here in the United States. He said he found only two studies. It snowballed from there. Petts received $160,000 from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, to study paternity leave over two years.<\/p>\n

Data dive<\/span><\/h5>\n

Petts searched through three national surveys for his data: The National Longitudinal Survey of Youth from 1997; a Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study; and an Early Childhood Longitudinal Study from the National Center for Education Statistics.<\/p>\n

Upcoming papers\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Petts has three papers under review on subtopics of paternity leave. The first he said is largely a story of advantage versus disadvantage. \u201cFathers who are better off are more likely to have access to paternity leave, are more likely to have access to paid paternity leave, and are much more likely to take longer periods of leave than less advantaged fathers,\u201d said Petts. His second paper is about fathers and their involvement in child rearing. It\u2019s connected to whether a father has leave or not. The longer the leave, the more likely a dad is engaged in developmental activities like playing and reading books. Petts said, \u201cThey\u2019re also more likely to engage in childcare like changing diapers, feedings, and those kinds of things. That\u2019s true in infant stages.\u201d Lastly, Petts said fathers who take longer periods of paternity leave, tend to be more engaged in their child\u2019s life, \u201cFathers who wanted to be more involved, who have more positive attitudes about fatherhood are also the ones who are more likely to take leave.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other benefits<\/span><\/h5>\n

There were other notable findings. Paternity leave increases the likelihood that men take responsibility for their children. Petts said that means fathers are more willing to watch their kids on their own. Paternity leave is also likely to give fathers the opportunity to be more involved with their children. The same rings true in disadvantaged families, who are more likely to be urban, minority, unmarried and low-income. Petts\u2019 research showed paternity leave increases a father\u2019s involvement among disadvantaged families, especially among fathers who do not live at home. Petts believes this could be a way to increase non-resident father\u2019s involvement in their child\u2019s life. \u201cEvidence seems to suggest that paternity leave has the potential to increase the likelihood that fathers are more engaged with their children,\u201d said Petts.<\/p>\n

A more involved dad<\/span><\/h5>\n

That\u2019s Malik Perry\u2019s goal \u2013 to be more involved in his son\u2019s life. From the crawling, cooing, and crying in the middle of the night, he wanted to experience everything as a new father.<\/p>\n

Building a successful family<\/span><\/h5>\n

Perry is very familiar with the stereotype of African-American dads. \u201cThey\u2019re known for not being around or not wanting to be involved. I want to provide for my family, and I also want to be there.\u201d Although Perry left his social work job, and took an extended paternity leave, he continued to coach high school basketball. Now he is the Youth Sports Director at the YMCA of Delaware County, which is also family friendly. Perry remains an advocate for paternity in the short-term and the long-term. \u201cIt\u2019s not just bonding with your child; it\u2019s also bonding with your significant other, the person that you\u2019re with. And that\u2019s important as far as building a loving, caring and successful family.\u201d<\/p>\n
