{"id":142,"date":"2018-10-14T12:47:12","date_gmt":"2018-10-14T16:47:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bsu.edu\/research\/?p=142"},"modified":"2019-11-19T14:18:04","modified_gmt":"2019-11-19T19:18:04","slug":"two-worlds-collide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bsu.edu\/research\/2018\/10\/14\/two-worlds-collide\/","title":{"rendered":"TWO WORLDS COLLIDE"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>How science created a theatrical genius<\/h1>\n<p><strong>Energy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the <em>mot juste<\/em> that describes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsu.edu\/academics\/collegesanddepartments\/theatredance\/who-we-are\/faculty-and-staff\/directing-stage-education-studies\/blackmerjennifer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jennifer Blackmer<\/a>, the 2018 recipient of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsu.edu\/about\/administrativeoffices\/sponsored-projects-administration\/outreach-and-education\/outstanding-faculty-awardees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Outstanding Creative Endeavor Award<\/a>. This yearly award is given to a current faculty member who is nominated by colleagues. A selection committee evaluates each application and announces the recipient at the annual Fall Opening Convocation.<\/p>\n<p>Jennifer Blackmer, a professor of theater and executive director for immersive learning and the Virginia B. Ball Center for Creative Inquiry, is known to put her zeal for women\u2019s empowerment into her creative work. This work often manifests itself in the form of plays. These plays exhibit all the trappings of a visionary who wants her audience to first hear her story, empathize, and then take action.<\/p>\n<p>Two of her well-known plays, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jenniferblackmer.com\/unraveled\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Unraveled<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jenniferblackmer.com\/alias-grace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Alias Grace<\/em><\/a>, both have a common theme: women empowerment. <em>Unraveled<\/em> explores how a woman, who is also a scientist, deals with the death of her mother, while <em>Alias Grace<\/em> is a stage adaptation of the novel by the famous author Margaret Atwood. Weller as Captain Will Alford.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Another play, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jenniferblackmer.com\/human-terrain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Human Terrain<\/em><\/a>\u2014which won Blackmer the Sloan Grant from the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tribecafilm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tribeca Film Festival<\/a> and a finalist position at the <a href=\"http:\/\/dchornfoundation.org\/about-yds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Yale Drama Competition<\/a>\u2014is a military drama that tells the story of an American anthropologist working in Iraq for a military program, the Human Terrain System. The anthropologist, Mabry Hoffman, is caught in a dilemma as she tries to help her new friend, an Iraqi woman, survive while trying to balance her commitment to the military program.<\/p>\n<p><em>Human Terrain<\/em> is now on its way to becoming a movie with production slated to start in Spring 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Her fervor diffuses into conversations with her students here at Ball State. Since she arrived at Ball State in 2003, Blackmer has taught several classes including directing, playwriting, and not surprisingly, special topics in science on stage. Her enthusiasm for her students and the Ball State community is indeed palpable. \u201cIt\u2019s OK to suck,\u201d she tells her students while reminiscing about the times \u201cshe wanted to quit\u201d throughout her career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has a unique way of blending her interest in intellectual pursuits\u2014science being chief among them,\u201d said William Jenkins, chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jenniferblackmer.com\/delicate-particle-logic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Delicate Particle Logic<\/em><\/a>, another one of her plays, crystallizes how her other passions\u2014 science, especially physics, and history\u2014blend perfectly with her creative activism for women\u2019s empowerment. The play highlights the story behind the discovery of nuclear fission. It shows the result of the politics of discrimination during the Nazi era. Lise Meitner and Fritz Strassmann contributed heavily to the discovery but were never recognized since the Nobel Prize only went to Otto Hahn after World War I.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI auditioned for the theater program at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.evansville.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Evansville<\/a>,\u201d Blackmer said as she described the scene that led her to the world of theater almost 20 years ago. \u201cAnd I told my parents,\u201d she continued, \u201cthat if I do not get accepted in the theater program, I will go probably elsewhere and study physics.\u201d<\/p>\n<h6>This article was written by Adeboye Olaniyan.<\/h6>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How science created a theatrical genius Energy.
