{"id":80,"date":"2018-07-18T16:35:38","date_gmt":"2018-07-18T20:35:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bsu.edu\/online\/?p=80"},"modified":"2020-04-02T14:49:00","modified_gmt":"2020-04-02T18:49:00","slug":"high-school-dropout-becomes-mae-graduate-early-childhood-advocate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bsu.edu\/online\/2018\/07\/high-school-dropout-becomes-mae-graduate-early-childhood-advocate\/","title":{"rendered":"High School Dropout Becomes MAE Graduate, Early Childhood Advocate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Having dropped out of high school barely into her freshman year, Tammy Carney might not have been voted most likely to earn a<span style=\"color: #ba0c2f\"><strong> <a style=\"color: #ba0c2f\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bsu.edu\/academics\/collegesanddepartments\/online\/academic-programs\/masters\/maelemed\">master\u2019s degree in elementary education<\/a><\/strong><\/span> and own and operate the highest-rated childcare center achievable in Indiana.<\/p>\n<p>But that was the success Carney celebrated in spring 2018 when she graduated with a Ball State master\u2019s degree and was considering a doctorate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never dreamed I could achieve any of this but I have become the leader and mentor I have always wanted to become,\u201d says Carney, who founded Udder Angels Learning Center in Alexandria, Indiana, in 1998.<\/p>\n<h2>Fails First College Attempt<\/h2>\n<p>After leaving home and high school in upstate New York, Carney worked part-time jobs during the day and finished her GED in the evenings. Her first college attempt ended in failure. After she and her husband moved to Indiana and started a family, Carney was soon babysitting for other families. Because she wanted to provide a caregiving service that was professional, she opened in-home childcare, with a developmentally appropriate curriculum, which soon became a licensed childcare center. In the meantime, Carney earned associate and bachelor\u2019s degrees, both in early childhood education.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016 she began work on her online master\u2019s in elementary education with an early childhood focus.<\/p>\n<h2>Wanted Safe Place for Children<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI felt it was important to earn my master\u2019s degree to help me gain the knowledge to grow into the highest rated childcare center possible in Indiana,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd I wanted to give children a safe place to go where they will be loved, cherished, and accepted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under Carney\u2019s direction, Udder Angels achieved a Paths to Quality Level 4 rating, the highest indicator of quality for early education in Indiana, as well as national accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Was a Matter of Discipline\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Carney says adjusting to online study was just a matter of discipline.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had to learn to dedicate certain days and times to studying and reading my syllabus,\u201d says Carney. \u201cI stayed in contact with my instructors and immediately contacted them if I had any questions.
