Ball State helped prepare him for that difference and allowed him to stay on the cutting edge of educational needs today.<\/p>\n<p>Receiving his Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Indiana Wesleyan University, Phares taught for several years before coming to Ball State to receive his Master\u2019s in Education in 2007. He then continued his education an<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-743 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/12\/18123645\/DSC02038-1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"The front doors of Carmel High School\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/12\/18123645\/DSC02038-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/12\/18123645\/DSC02038-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/12\/18123645\/DSC02038-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/12\/18123645\/DSC02038-1-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2023\/12\/18123645\/DSC02038-1-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>d earned a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsu.edu\/academics\/collegesanddepartments\/online\/academic-programs\/masters\/maedadmin\">Specialist in Education in Educational Administration and Supervision<\/a> in 2012 and later a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsu.edu\/academics\/collegesanddepartments\/online\/academic-programs\/doctoral\/edadmin\">Doctorate of Education<\/a> in 2017.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why Ball State?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A husband and father, Phares says that some of the main reasons he chose Ball State were its credibility as a university and its flexibility. Between working and being a husband, he needed something that could fit his busy schedule, and Ball State had just the right programs and offerings he needed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Helping Hand When Needed<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Two professors come to his mind when thinking of who made an impact on him the most: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsu.edu\/academics\/collegesanddepartments\/educational-leadership\/about-us\/staffdirectory\/faculty\/salloumserena\">Dr. Serena Salloum<\/a>, who was the chair of Phares\u2019s dissertation and a \u201cconstant support\u201d for him, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsu.edu\/academics\/collegesanddepartments\/educational-leadership\/about-us\/staffdirectory\/faculty\/quickmarilynn\">Dr. Marilyn Quick<\/a>, who he had \u201call along, through all three degrees.\u201d Phares says Dr. Quick always gave sound advice, and whether it was taking courses or listening to a guest lecture from her, he\u2019s grateful for her presence as he made his way through his career as a Cardinal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Advice for Students<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If there\u2019s any advice Phares has for potential or current students, it\u2019s one word: commitment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re not making the commitment to study, to read, to write, to learn, it\u2019s not going to go well,\u201d he says. I\u2019ve been fortunate to be a principal at the elementary, middle, and high school level, and I have several students, about 150 or so, that I will have been their principal for 11 of their 13 years [at Carmel Schools]. In some of those individuals, to see where they started as a kindergartener, to be able to see where they\u2019re going to walk across that stage as a senior this year is pretty remarkable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Phares couldn\u2019t give any specific students as examples but says seeing students mature is part of what\u2019s most rewarding for him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThink of it like a plant maturation process,\u201d he says. \u201cThere\u2019s food, sunlight, water\u2026like plants, it takes time for kids to grow. Seeing them mature, going from a shy kid to someone in a leadership role, or seeing them go on to university is wonderful, and that doesn\u2019t happen alone.
