{"id":516,"date":"2022-01-20T16:15:30","date_gmt":"2022-01-20T21:15:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bsu.edu\/online\/?p=516"},"modified":"2022-01-20T16:15:30","modified_gmt":"2022-01-20T21:15:30","slug":"graduate-nursing-student-battled-covid-as-brand-new-rn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bsu.edu\/online\/2022\/01\/graduate-nursing-student-battled-covid-as-brand-new-rn\/","title":{"rendered":"Graduate Nursing Student Battled COVID as Brand-New RN"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In her first year as an RN, bachelor of nursing alumnus Sabrina Manahan confronted COVID-19 when she prepped a patient for the ventilator.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI held his hand and cried with him as he said goodbye to his wife, not knowing if it would be his last,\u201d says Sabrina, who is now in Ball State\u2019s online master\u2019s in nursing. \u201cHe made us promise to do everything possible to save him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These were the early days of the pandemic. Like other hospitals, her hospital was beginning to isolate cases with COVID from other patients.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Begins Search for Master\u2019s Degree<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Meanwhile, Sabrina was comparing graduate nursing programs.<\/p>\n<p>Easy choice. Except for clinicals, her alma mater\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsu.edu\/academics\/collegesanddepartments\/nursing\/academics\/masters-degrees\/masters-of-science-in-nursing\">master\u2019s in nursing<\/a> was online. She knew the professors. She knew the staff. Class time and study time would fit around her work schedule. Online study decreased the risks of students spreading the virus among classmates. And she could pursue a concentration leading to a family nurse practitioner&#8217;s license.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI chose this concentration so that I will be able to treat the general population rather than a smaller demographic in which I work with now,\u201d she says, referring to her present position in ICU. \u201cI have always wanted to work in a small family clinic.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Treats COVID Patients Every Day<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-518\" src=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/01\/19095829\/RTY8758-copy-300x191.jpg\" alt=\"Sabrina Manahan enters data into laptop in ICU\" width=\"300\" height=\"191\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/01\/19095829\/RTY8758-copy-300x191.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/01\/19095829\/RTY8758-copy.jpg 684w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Today Sabrina works at IU Health Arnett Hospital in Lafayette, Indiana.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am working with COVID-positive patients on a daily basis, so it was nice that I\u2019d not have to worry about time from school if I were to need tested\u2014or if I were COVID-positive,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Treating COVID-positive patients isn\u2019t quite as harrowing as it was during her first year as an\u00a0RN, says Sabrina.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>\u201cTo Others This Was Pure Terror\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cWe had a whole floor designated for COVID patients, and every day you were randomly assigned to either work on the trauma unit or the COVID unit,\u201d she says.\u00a0\u201cTo some, this was no issue, but to others this was pure terror.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many nurses questioned giving COVID patient care when the risks were still unknown, says Sabrina. They watched experienced RNs cry when they huddled from fear and lack of information.<\/p>\n<p>Nursing staff were receiving updated guidelines\u2014daily\u2014from the Centers for Disease Control or World Health Organization which triggered changes in procedures.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Constant Battle to Keep Up<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cIt seemed to be a constant battle with new surges of infection that we had to keep up with to make sure we had enough beds, supplies, and staff to manage the great increase in patients,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Sabrina was one of few who volunteered to work the COVID floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was able to volunteer with less fear than others because in the beginning it was mainly affecting people in their 40s and above,\u201d she says. \u201cI was only 24 years old so I figured it would be safer for me to go to our COVID unit than my coworkers in their 40s and 50s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not that she\u2019ll ever forget that first step inside a COVID patient\u2019s room.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Says She Was Shaking as She Put on PPE<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI remember I was shaking as I put on my PPE,\u201d says Sabrina, referring to the personal protective equipment worn by health-care workers. \u201cIt was a lot of stress knowing that if you didn&#8217;t wear everything correctly or take it off correctly that you could risk spreading or contracting the virus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe most sobering aspect for me was having to hold up an iPad for family members to say goodbye to their loved ones,\u201d says Sabrina. \u201cI could never imagine not being able to be there with a loved one while they passed, and I was having people do it every day.\u00a0 I still get angry thinking about it to this day.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Pandemic Impact Considered in Grad Class\u00a0 <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The impact of the pandemic has found its way into her graduate classes, she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have discussed the pathophysiology of coronavirus and how it has impacted health care,\u201d she says.\u00a0\u201cWe discuss how the pandemic has greatly advanced telehealth and the way people access health care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Connie McIntosh, associate professor of nursing, learned Sabrina\u2019s and other students\u2019 stories when they were in her nursing information technology class. \u201cBeing able to balance graduate work with a full-time professional nursing role is not easy,\u201d says Connie. \u201cBeing able to do it during a pandemic is heroic-like.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In her first year as an RN, bachelor of nursing alumnus Sabrina Manahan confronted COVID-19 when she prepped a patient for the ventilator. \u201cI held his hand and cried with him as he said goodbye to his wife, not knowing if it would be his last,\u201d says Sabrina, who is now in Ball State\u2019s online [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":156,"featured_media":517,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[4],"tags":[7,28],"class_list":["post-516","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-student-and-faculty-stories","tag-masters","tag-nursing"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
