{"id":490,"date":"2021-12-17T12:51:26","date_gmt":"2021-12-17T17:51:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bsu.edu\/online\/?p=490"},"modified":"2021-12-17T12:56:51","modified_gmt":"2021-12-17T17:56:51","slug":"i-wanted-to-change-their-life-trajectories-alumnus-jeremy-coleman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bsu.edu\/online\/2021\/12\/i-wanted-to-change-their-life-trajectories-alumnus-jeremy-coleman\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cI wanted to change their life trajectories:\u201d Alumnus Jeremy Coleman"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In his first job after college, Jeremy Coleman saw the world from the viewpoint of a correctional officer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI met so many talented and hopeful young people that all shared a similar\u00a0story of abandonment and abuse,\u201d he says. \u201cI wanted to dramatically change the life trajectories of\u00a0the students most affected by economic\u00a0inequality, discriminatory\u00a0housing, and economic policy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a later job, where he mentored students facing challenges in schools throughout Indianapolis, Jeremy discovered what he calls \u201cthe magic of the classroom.\u201d Finding that he had a unique connection with students, he pursued his teaching license and, in his first year, landed in a classroom of 38 fourth-graders, where he \u201cloved every minute of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Students Discover Voice, Power<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThe students that I mentored discovered their own voice and power and made tremendous progress in schools,\u201d says Jeremy, who today is principal of Brookview Elementary on the east side of Indianapolis.<\/p>\n<p>While teaching in a local charter school, he enrolled in Ball State\u2019s online <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsu.edu\/academics\/collegesanddepartments\/online\/academic-programs\/masters\/maedadmin\"><span style=\"color: #ba0c2f\">master of arts (MAE) in educational administration and supervision<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe beauty of the Ball State program was its emphasis on practice which is what made me choose Ball State&#8217;s MAE program over other programs,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy says the program was \u201cfoundational in my understanding of how to think like an administrator.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Says MAE Class was Jolt He Needed<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-494 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2021\/12\/17125359\/RTY2936DRHB-copy-2-300x200.jpeg\" alt=\"Jeremy Coleman high-fiving two students\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2021\/12\/17125359\/RTY2936DRHB-copy-2-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2021\/12\/17125359\/RTY2936DRHB-copy-2-1024x683.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2021\/12\/17125359\/RTY2936DRHB-copy-2-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-blogs.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2021\/12\/17125359\/RTY2936DRHB-copy-2.jpeg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>He remembers vividly his first class with Dr. Marilynn Quick, associate professor of educational leadership.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was challenging, it was rigorous,\u00a0and it was also exactly the jolt that I needed to see leadership clearly,\u201d he says.\u00a0\u201cI remember\u00a0a few things about my first MAE class with Dr. Quick: reading Machiavelli&#8217;s <em>The Prince<\/em> and <em>Six Thinking Hats<\/em>. Both were wonderfully designed to\u00a0induce critical thinking and analysis. But the third indelible\u00a0experience\u00a0from her class was the self-assessment rubrics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy assumed the role of Brookview principal in 2019. Part of his responsibility is setting the tone and establishing direction for the school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut none of that is possible without talented and dedicated staff and great students.\u00a0 We have both at Brookview,\u201d he says. \u201cI will take some credit for hiring some of our rock star teachers!\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>EdD Was Next on His Journey<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In 2013, Jeremy enrolled in Ball State\u2019s online <span style=\"color: #ba0c2f\"><a style=\"color: #ba0c2f\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bsu.edu\/academics\/collegesanddepartments\/online\/academic-programs\/doctoral\/edadmin\">doctorate of education (EdD) in educational administration and supervision<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the major determinants for starting the journey was the level of support I would have along the way,\u201d he says. \u201cI heard horror stories of people who were \u2018all but dissertation\u2019 with little hope and even less support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy says he knew he had expert guidance for his \u201cdissertation journey\u201d with Dr. Serena Salloum, Ball State associate professor of educational leadership, as his chair.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Dr. Salloum Helped Him Persevere<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThey say a leader is someone you would follow to a place that you wouldn&#8217;t go by yourself,\u201d he says. \u201cThis journey is arduous and would&#8217;ve been impossible for me to go it alone.\u00a0During the challenging stages of writing the dissertation, knowing that Dr. Salloum was in my corner, helped me persevere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy says the EdD was life altering and prepared him to be a better researcher, writer, and, ultimately, a better leader.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>EdD was Crowning Achievement<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cCommencement was the moment for me,\u201d says Jeremy, who recently received his degree. \u201cI can remember very clearly being at Worthen Arena and enjoying an overwhelming sense of being \u2018home.\u2019 It was the crowning professional\u00a0accomplishment of my career.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy has also partnered with The National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemist and Chemical Engineers (NoBCChE), 100 Black Men of Indianapolis, Teach for America, and Keep Indiana Learning, all dedicated to improving the lives of minority students.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In his first job after college, Jeremy Coleman saw the world from the viewpoint of a correctional officer. \u201cI met so many talented and hopeful young people that all shared a similar\u00a0story of abandonment and abuse,\u201d he says. \u201cI wanted to dramatically change the life trajectories of\u00a0the students most affected by economic\u00a0inequality, discriminatory\u00a0housing, and economic [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":156,"featured_media":493,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[4],"tags":[35,27,37],"class_list":["post-490","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-student-and-faculty-stories","tag-doctor-of-education","tag-doctorate","tag-educational-administration-and-supervision"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.7 -
