{"id":231,"date":"2020-01-02T11:20:57","date_gmt":"2020-01-02T16:20:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bsu.edu\/online\/?p=231"},"modified":"2020-06-19T10:55:13","modified_gmt":"2020-06-19T14:55:13","slug":"masters-licensure-certificate-courses-stoke-leonhardts-love-for-learning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bsu.edu\/online\/2020\/01\/masters-licensure-certificate-courses-stoke-leonhardts-love-for-learning\/","title":{"rendered":"Master\u2019s, Licensure, Certificate Courses Stoke Leonhardt\u2019s Love for Learning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Barely into his\u00a0<strong><span style=\"color: #ba0c2f\"><a style=\"color: #ba0c2f\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bsu.edu\/academics\/collegesanddepartments\/online\/academic-programs\/masters\/mainedpsych\">master\u2019s in educational psychology<\/a><\/span><\/strong>, high school teacher Larry Leonhardt sensed the impact his course work was having on his classroom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEducational psychology is all about the science of how we learn,\u201d says Leonhardt, who teaches psychology and history at Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis, Indiana. \u201cUnderstanding how learning works allowed me to sift through inefficient study techniques and have my students try more evidence-based practices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Larry\u2019s bachelor\u2019s work was in world history but when Lawrence North needed someone to teach the overflow of psychology students, he happily volunteered. Today, he teaches all of his school\u2019s psych classes plus advanced placement (AP) history.<\/p>\n<h2>Mentor and Advisor to IB Students<\/h2>\n<p>He also mentors the school\u2019s international baccalaureate (IB) students who are required to write extended essays their senior year to earn an IB diploma, granted to graduates of a rigorous, college prep curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>Larry says the online delivery of the Ball State master\u2019s in educational psychology gave him practical experience with online platforms to enhance his classroom instruction since Canvas is the platform used by his students.<\/p>\n<p>He also liked the fact that the delivery format \u201cfollowed pedagogical and cognitive principles consistently.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Teacher and Coach of Teens<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI have a particular interest in adolescent developmental psychology because I spend a lot of time around teens,\u201d says Larry, who has taught high school for more than 30 years. He\u2019s also coached high school athletes on multiple volleyball teams during the same span of years.<\/p>\n<div class=\"editor-breakout right\"><\/div>\n<p>After finishing his master\u2019s in 2018, he began pursuing licensure in gifted and talented education, also through Ball State. Courses such as Socioemotional Needs of Gifted Students and Models and Strategies for Gifted Education also had a positive impact on AP and IB students who typically carry more demanding workloads and can, in his words, become \u201cbasket cases\u201d when juggling academic obligations.<\/p>\n<p>To support his psychology teaching in general, Larry is doing online course work for a graduate certificate in Neuropsychology.<\/p>\n<h2>Program Has Transformed His Teaching<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI love learning,\u201d says Larry. \u201cI just have a passion for it, and these courses stoke that as well as giving me ideas of how to enhance my own teaching and students\u2019 learning.
